Custom big block intake design + manufacture
Re: Custom big block intake design + manufacture
I still have everything I need I just have to do it. I've recently started transitioning into my career (Law Enforcement) so Ive been really busy the last 6 months. Hopefully when I get some down time I can just get it done. The car is almost finished with the paint and the engine (I've got a video of it running somewhere on here), and the hood is the last piece that has to be modded and I can't do that until this is done.

I did a similar thing with an 8.1 bbc intake. If you google
496 into 04 silverado
i have pictures posted etc. Trouble i had was finding a compotent cnc operator to do some basic machining. i did all the hard stuff on a manual mill. Only took me 3 years of dropping the intake off somewhere and asking hey can you do this, then finally this last year a machinst buddy let me use his manual mill so i could get it done.

Well here it is. Its nearly complete. Its made of six pieces of T6 blanchard ground aluminum we had laying around the shop. I figured since we already had it and it was free I'd use .5" pieces to make the majority of the intake. Each of the pieces has an o-ring groove cut into it so that when its put together it seals nicely. As you can see I also went ahead and fabricated a throttle body to go with it. Everything bolts together nicely but I still have to make throttle linkage brackets and a "snout" elbow for the turbo intake piping.
Questions/comments welcome. If I were to do it again Id probably just buy a two inch pieces of aluminum and make it two pieces.
Edit: If your wondering why its so "short" its because I made it to fit under the stock hood.

Re: Custom big block intake design + manufacture
looks neat but its overdone imo. all a plenum has to do is fill well and be able to deal with teh demands of each port. i would move the TB forward of all the ports and use round bar for fastening the top of the plenum to the lower plenum. the back wall should connect from the back driver side port to the back passenger side port. lastly, i would get rid of each wedge.
air does not like turning corners and hates changing direction. like an old engine builder told me: think like air.
the way i would do it is almost like the superram plenum. or.. a smaller box/log for each bank using readily available Ford TB's or stock LSx TB's.
its a cool attempt but i feel simpler is better.

Raver thanks for the comments. My first two prototype intakes were made with much of the same logic as you mentioned. I ran into several issues with fitment and hood clearance which is how I ended up with this third version.
I have no idea how it works yet as I just finished making the TPS housing. Hopefully in the next few days I can finally fire it up and see what happens.
