1,000+ hp 1LE F2 build
I bought my 1992 Z28 LE1 in February 2007 with just under 5,000 original miles on it. The car was immaculate. I had started small modifications to it as the years went on, and built it into a pretty decent street car, running a 6.74 1/8th mile on 315/35-17 MT street tires. Then in March 2010 the engine caught fire at the track, thus prompting me to build the dream car I had always wanted.
The rest of this thread documents the build into what many would consider one of the most unique 3rd gen Camaro's around. My goal was to attain over 1,000 horsepower yet remain docile enough to drive around on the street, listen to a nice stereo, drive to car meets as well as to the racetrack, all while maintaining a like-brand-new condition, clean street car.
Here's the car the day I brought it home.

It'll be a cool build in the end Im sure, but why did you start with a 1LE from the beginning? Everything that made the 1LE unique from any other Z28 has been replaced. All thats left is the non-AC box and the marginally bigger brakes

Re: 1,000+ hp 1LE F2 build
It's pretty much one of them "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" type of deals. I REALLY wanted one of the Hogan's sheet metal intake until I realized that the cheapest V8 manifold they offer is 2,600. I paid 2,600 for my whole IROC.
The E.F.I. V8 single and dual throttle body manifolds are 2,800 and 2,900. Their cross ram dual carb manifold is 3,600. Very pricey stuff.

I knew I was going to possibly offend or upset some people by doing this to a 1LE car. However when I got the car it didn't have the original engine and the tranny had been modified as well the ring and pinion had been replaced. It was never going to be original again as far as I was concerned. Also I have never been a big #'s matching special car kinda car guy. Plus an 8 sec street car is cooler to me that the 1LE designation. Thanks to all who check it out!

Just noticing you live in H-town. I'm out on lake Conroe. I have never seen you at the track around here. Also kudos on your build. I have been following it since its inception. Where did you get your intercooler? I have been looking at this intercooler for a 4th gen http://shearerfabrications.com/products.php?itemid=200
No one can really tell me if it will work or not. I know the 3rd and 4th gen cars are very similar in some respects, but I am not sure about the front end. Thanks for checking me out. I have another buddy with a 91 car we just put on the rotisserie in the Spring 2920 area. Love to see your car in person. Cars n coffee ever? Let me know

I saw that intercooler, no idea if it will work or not. I thought 4th gens were different on the front ends. I'll have to look under my TA and try to think about the thirdgen to see if its the same or not.
My intercooler is a Treadstone twin turbo unit.. fits perfect in the front between the frame rails. Just made my own mounts. If you seen the build pics its in there and looks great. They make same sized ones for single in and single out type setups so it could still work for you, and fairly cheap at 400-500 bucks for the biggest ones. Seems to do well but no idea if it can support much over 1000-1300 hp, since its rated at 1300..i think that may be optimistic.

Re: 1,000+ hp 1LE F2 build
I have talked to the engineer at Bell Intercoolers a couple of times. I am not in a hurry right now. Not sure what I am going to do at this point. The biggest thing I would like to achieve is for the inlet to in some way replicate the factory L98 TPI where the pipes would come around the hood latch and merge to mate with the throttle body. If anyone has any thoughts on this please advise.

The spacers came from Hawks. I don't have them in the rear any longer. I had Eric at Midwest Chassis build my 9 inch wider so I could loose my spacers. Will be going with 18'' rims with the new build and will get an off-set that will let me say by by to my from spacers too. Pics of the rear install done October 09.

Re: 1,000+ hp 1LE F2 build

Re: 1,000+ hp 1LE F2 build
curious, but how much clearance do you have from that upper torque arm mount on the 9" setup to the fuel tank at ride height?
#39
Re: 1,000+ hp 1LE F2 build
Fuel tank is not close at all. The car is lowered about 2''. They only modifacations I had to make to clear the arm was to extend the brackets that hold the parking break cable in the tunnel up a couple of inches. Other than that its all clear.

Re: 1,000+ hp 1LE F2 build
Sounds about right. You might do a little better if you don't have to pay for shipping. Eric is great to deal with and his product is superb. "If you have the means I highly recommend picking one up" I ordered mine 4th gen width so I could do away with the spacers. Worth the money. I acutally came out cheaper than the moser 12 bolt or inch. Much nicer eqipment in my opinion. Good luck.

Re: 1,000+ hp 1LE F2 build
Are you referring to the gaskets betweeen the top and bottom plenum on the HSR? I alomost went with a Mini ram but you can't really get much port velocity with such short runners and I need to spin this blower to make the power it's capable of.
On another note I have a family member in Japan checking on getting the heat extractor hood for my build. I know that thing has been kind of like big foot around here. If I have anymore luck than previous attempts I will keep everyone updated.

Did you rob a bank? I think your crankshaft alone is worth more than my entire project. Amazing stuff, I'll be impressed if you keep it street friendly. Any plans on a transmission? I see the driveshaft is in place, but I didn't see any tranny pics.
