I didn't get pictures of it but we also determined the center line of each wheel well using a plumb bob and the center line of the car as well. These measurements will be used to assist us in locating the Vette rear end assembly in the correct position in the car.
Stay tuned since things are starting to get more exciting, I can't wait to get this project done!!!

Re: LS1, Torque Tube and Transaxle swap

We worked for a few hours on the car yesterday. We decided to break out the plasma cutter to make life a little easier in getting some of the frame panels removed, there are a lot more layers of metal coming together back there then you would think from initially looking at it. In a few sections it is three layers deep. At any rate we cut out some sections with the plasma cutter on the drivers side and basically got all of the suspension attachment points out of the way. Next we will move onto the passenger side and the panhard bar bracket etc... We also produced another fixed shock and got the rear suspension all put together, also we made a brace to tie the two frame sections together, this will ensure that the frame stays square and doesn't bow out while we are working with it.

I know it, I am fired, LOL! I have been so busy with work I haven't had much of a chance to get over there. My friend has been working on it without me so I will need to stop by and get some pictures. I will work on that this week!

Re: LS1, Torque Tube and Transaxle swap

that's a lot of meat to be putting under the rear for sure, but that isn't a bad thing.... i guess what i mean is, i have no idea HOW it fits under there, but it obviously does, and more power to you for doing it.

it almost seems like you should be mounting this stuff to a tube frame though, especially if you're going to soup up the LS1 in the long run. not sure if your car is a T-top car or not, but they are known for body flex. you may at least put lateral bars in and various supports along the frame.

but, overall, this is an exciting build and im glad to see someone doing it.

i actually considered doing this to my 4th gen when i had it, but couldn't convince myself to go "transaxle" not because i thought they were bad, but logistically insane.

independent rear is going to make that car handle SOOO much better...

i didn't read the entire post, so im not sure if you are putting the front end components from the c5 on this or not, but i hope so lol.. i really wanna see it..

Re: LS1, Torque Tube and Transaxle swap

Once again it seems that so many things are conspiring against me, work, holiday's, moving. At any rate we have made a little more headway with the car, a lot more material has been removed from the rear of the car and we are very close to putting the rear end under the car. From there we will be looking into the grafting and building of new frame sections to support the factory C5 frame section that we are retaining. Here are a couple of pictures. More to follow, most likely after the holidays are over.

Re: LS1, Torque Tube and Transaxle swap

Hi All,

We are still working on the project but lots of things have happened that have delayed it. Mainly being that the owner of the property where my friend was renting his shop space decided to sell and they are putting in condo's so we had to move the car out of the shop and close it down. The car is now at my house on a customized rolling cart, and we are planning on finishing it here. I will post some pictures within the next couple of days. The rear end assembly appears to be the correct width which is cool, we weren't too sure if it would need to be shortened or not. Sorry for the delays in updating this, I am currently building 3 cars at the same time so I kind of bounce back and forth from project to project.

Re: LS1, Torque Tube and Transaxle swap

I was talking this over with a friend but I wanted LQ4 and a TR-6060 or t56. I googled the swap and like always its on tgo. I was going to make it a live axle but with the torque tube not moving that would made it harder to do. Let us know and it sucks about the shop I was going to do my car at my uncle shop but it was sold.

Re: LS1, Torque Tube and Transaxle swap

Hi All,

I am still working on this project, however it has been shelved for the moment. I am currently working on putting an LS1 and 4l60 in my other thirdgen and getting it back on the road, that way I can get it in and out of the garage easily so we can finish working on the other car. Anyways, more to follow in the future, just got too many projects going on all at once.. Thanks for your interest. I do have some pictures to take of the C5 rear end under the back of the car, just hard to get the lighting right so you can see details. I will work on getting these posted soon.

Re: LS1, Torque Tube and Transaxle swap

I just wonder, i can´t see why it wouldn´t work with the rear seat? I´ve looked at one picture on the torque tube and in ends a little bit after the rear seat and the geabox is also longer away. is their anyone in here who think´s it would work with the c5 rear axel and the rear seats?

Subscribed. I am going to do the same thing to my first car since it is set up with ladder bars now. Dont care about rear seats, but maybe can do some mods to get room for my two kids somehow by rearraning the passanger seat and rear cabin.
