replace radiator core support
A truck sat on my front end and am looking to replace my core support. I am wondering on the best way to remove spot welds. Do I drill the welds out? I wanna remove mine also remove one from another car and want to ensure proper installment. Just looking for tips on doing it right
Re: replace radiator core support
Spot weld cutter is one of the easiest and cleanest ways to remove spot welds. A grinding disc works too, but that makes the metal thinner and gets dust everywhere. You could even use a regular drill bit if you wanted. I'd use a spot weld cutter for my first choice. Body shops have them, Harbor Freight does as well.

Re: replace radiator core support
cool didnt know they actually had something just for spot welds. ya why use anything other than a specific tool for the job if its an option. thnx for opening my eyes. been searching forums and seems no one ever posts about this subject even tho everyone has front end damage lol. Pull a part is my friend where an entire front clip is under $100. I dont have the set up at home for an engine swap as it seems everyone else does. So I will get the drill bits you are talking about. any other do's and definite dont's? any personal experiences would help

Re: replace radiator core support
Eastwood has a skip proof spot weld cutter with replaceable heads for like $50 or so. It works really well if you use a little oil and slow with the drill speed and will last a long time.

If you find a spot weld cutter for cheap I'd love to know where. Either way a drill bit will usually work OK and you can use the hole left over for a plug weld to hold the new piece.
Just be ready for a lot of messy prying, grinding and cutting in addition, I've never seen something just pop apart after drilling out the welds. If you end up doing a lot of work an air hammer/chisel is helpful.

Most of the time the weld wil pop apart after using the Eastwood spot weld cutter. At most I usually have to use a panel seperating knife, and that is mostly when the spotweld isnt round, but tear drop shaped. Using the dril bit is not an efficiant way to do it since you dril through both panels

Re: replace radiator core support
i replaced mine, and to remove mine i used a chizzle and a grinder, cleaned up real good even for a rusted ontario car.... heres mine, it was right solid, i had two 8 inch arms that attched to the bottom of the frame, i dont have it anymore as that went to scrap with the car (way to rusty and found exact same car but no rust for under 500 no brainer)
