86 Sport Coupe ideas?

Its a long story, but ill just tell the basics. A few months ago I bought an 86 sports coupe for $800 with a free and clear title. I took the engine out and ran the casting numbers. The engine is a Vortec 5.7 made in 1998 with the 062 casting vortec heads. Runs strong and has a carb setup. Transmission is a rebuilt 700R4. So I took the powertrain out and Im installing that in my 95 2DR s10 blazer.

Now the camaro is sitting in the backyard and Im debating on sending it to the crusher.. or make it my second project on the back burner. So far it needs alot of work. Needs both floorpans (ttops suck!), needs a hood. The fenders are bent from the hood flying up, but a little body work and that will buff out. Needs windshield and a powertrain and paintjob. Its not terribly bad, but the rust definetly has to be fixed. I was thinking of a cheap lq4 swap and eventually a t56. Also would like to do all 4th interior with some fiberglass work. Sounds fun, but would take forever.

what do you guys think?

Re: 86 Sport Coupe ideas?

honestly, i'm as much for a project as the next man, butttttt.... in this case, if you bought it specifically to yank the motor out of it, (and did) and didn't really give a **** about it in the first place, chances are you really won't want to put the -thousands- of dollars into it to make it worth HALF of what you put into it...

i.e. you spend 10,000 making it look and run nice........... and it's only worth 4500 when you're done...

if you don't LOVE that car, tear it down completely, and run it across the scales... if you tear it all down you get more for it since there are various TYPES of metal in the car...

then..... take that money and put it towards a nicer, RUNNING car of a similar year or model, and use the nicer one as a foundation..

seriously, if the car is that trashed, it's not worth d!cking with... i've passed up soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many of them because i know how expensive it is to make them nice VS what their actually worth...

granted, yes.. some of them are worth quite a bit... like a low miles, all original 92 red convertible with a 5 speed... worth quite a bit... i've seen them sell between 10k-18k..

but an 86 coupe? na....... it's a base line belly button car... "everyone's got one" their all over the place and aren't worth much unless their cherry... and .. that costs a LOT of money... 10K easy... a DECENT paint job is 4500 alone.. that's not including body work.

so...... unless you are a body man and LOVE the car, scrap the sucker...
