Hello
New Guy to the Web Site and i need so good information from some people who know what they are talking about i hope i put this in the right section in not i apologize. OK My build is probably not exactly what you all like but i need some info on the rear end i have its out of a 71 or 73 camaro 3.73 gears orginal posi from the factory with like 70k on it i'm going to cut it done and put it in My 80 modle Chevy luv Truck stepside ( it has a s10 frame under it going to be mini tubed and has been lowered 3 inches to off set the center of gravity in it). i also have a bran-new 427 dart block 4" stroke 4.125" bore scat rods crank in aluminum probe forged pistions 220 cc heads don't quite remember the spec on the cam but its limted to about 5500 rpms so i can keep it on the street with the 6-Spd and it is a full rollar engine (rocker arms and lifter as well as the cam) air gap intake and a 850cfm crab and the guy who's building it for me said it will dyno 600+hp and right at 600ft-lb at the crank i know i am leaving some things out as to the fact i can't remember all of it at this time but anyways the trans is new T-56 6-Spd rated at 700ft-lbs so i need to know what the rear end will hold it is a 8.5" with 3.73s in factory posi will be narrowed and have the c-clip eliminater on it as well i have seen the rear end behind so built BBC and they held just fine. the Truck will be daily Driven and ran on the Strip occansionaly and will be ran rather hard quite often do to a heavy right foot thanks for the info

are you getting shorter axle shafts or having the stock ones cut down? if it was me, id get a set of chromoly shafts for whatever length you have to cut the housing down to.

Replacement axles will be much stronger.

If this is a street car with street tires, stockers should last.

If you plan to hit the track, and or running sticky tires, upgraded axles would be very recommended.

youre gonna have to spend money to have the stock shafts cut down and possily have the splines cut in (depending on how far you gotta cut them down). you can put that money and a little extra in some much better shafts.

I agree with what these guys said. street tires, it probably won't hook well enough to give any problems but if you put sticky tires on it...you might break the stock axles... I'd upgrade now if you plan to run drag radials or slicks.

Why take a short cut now with the axles.. Your building a potent engine. You say you have a heavy right foot. Stock axles may last. And that is a big may. If you want it to last And be your daily driver upgrade your axle shafts. Build it right the first time and don't worry about it

Why limit it to 5500 rpms Peak near 6K, you will have a better chance at 600hp up that high. I dont think you can get 600 at 5500 rpms...maybe 580's.

Why 6000? Lol go right to 7000 and call it good. step up a few cam sizes. I run my big block to 7000 and she pulls hard from 3000 and up. Haven't got it onto a dyne yet but I'm guessing atleast 550
