got bored again, mini tub time

3 hours and 5 sawzall blades so far, having to work around the seats and roll bar took a little longer than anticipated. Probably won't mess with it again until later this week.

Also having previously boxed the front lower area and cutting out the bumpstop area and welding in sheet metal will add to the amount of time spent on this to finish cutting everything out. The rear arm rest metal will be full removed as well to save a little weight.

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

most shops charge in the $1000-1200 range to do a mini tub.

Ya my 220 volt lincoln will fly through this when I get to this point. Didn't want to spend anytime pulling out the seats or carpet just yet until I get to that point in cutting.

It sure is nice to have the extra room for larger tires.

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

I'm doing the same thing right now to fit 335's. Nice work so far...I'm not cutting into mine quite that far...I'm trying to keep the seat belt anchors and some of the arm rest bracing...lol

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

arm rest has to be cut out to do mini tubs, no way around that. No clue where the seat belt bolts are either, but I'm pretty sure those will be gone also. I still haven't cut far enough into the openings either, still another 1" at least to go.

If you use a conventional pre-fab tub the arm rest brace has to go. I'm not using a normal tub for that very reason plus my tires are only 26" diameter.

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

I prefer the mini tub even though I run TT5's. I like the tires to sit under the body a bit more for a better appearence and it gives you the room to grow the tire size if needed down the road.

I agree^ so is it easier to adapt a universal wheel tub kit to work or buy the 4th gen wolfe kit and make it work?

wolfe kit and wolfe spring kit

they don't make a universal mini tub kit that I'm aware of....? The universal kits are full tubs and not something I need since I doubt I'll ever toss on that huge of a tire.

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

If i did it again I would have extended my rear most part of the tub lower into the wheel well like a built in mud flap to help prevent all the rubber that accumulates under there. With the back of the tub lower it would catch all the rubber instead of my bumper cover and area that my crash bar bolts too. It sure suck picking the rubber out of there.

Ought to turn out real nice.

Tip: When you go to locate and weld in the spring adjusters, put the springs you're going to use on the rearend, put the spring adjusters on top of the springs and jack the rearend up. Make sure that at ride height the springs are straight up and down. If you need to trim the plates to get them to mount where you want them, feel free (I had to). Once you're happy with placement, using the rearend to locate them as above, tack them in, pull the rear out of the way and weld them up! You might want to put some tape, etc. on the threaded portion to prevent any MIG slag or trash from getting on them and making life hard.

I can't take too much credit for the tip, Madman and co told me that it would be easier to do it that way....

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

when i did mine i cut into arm rest brace,REMOVING just enof to move the wheel well inward almost 3" and made the inside tubs out of 18ga sheet. running right up to the back of the inside plastic. about 1/2 or less away.

saving up to just get it back halfed in a year or 2 (hoping) STILL SNOWBALLING!

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

I'll get some finished pics when I get a chance, just bought a complete light grey interior and was hoping to get that all cut out nicely before posting pics. Then I need to figure out who sells flat pieces of matching carpet to carpet the mini tubs as they're just painted flat black right now to stop from rusting. Anyone got an idea who sells it? Home depot and other hardware stores only sell outdoor carpet that looks like crap, and went into a michaels craft store but nothing in there as well.

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

I got black carpet material through Parts express I think. I got a little bit so I could cover the front kick panels from grey to black to match my newark auto carpet.

I love full mini tubes. But I also like full aluminum interiors lol. I was able to fit a 295/65/r15 under my wheel wells with no real mods. Just a put together rear weight jack kit and a ford 8.8 rear lol.

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

Car is looking good with those tires tucked man! I bought carpet through this company and I actually cut a small piece of carpet that would be behind a panel and sent it to them and they matched it for me and sent me a sample back. Color was very close. Also put up pictures when done cant wait to see how the interior comes out. Also sorry if this link is too late and you have already figured this out

You think 335 would fit ok in a mini tub? Also where do the doings and shocks mount? I want to do this with air ride. Think there would be issues?

can't really mini tub and keep the same size as stock diameter springs, you use a 2.5" diameter spring to gain the extra space. I ran 28x12.5 ET streets for a while which were 12.6" section width, how wide are the 335s? I just did some cutting/welding and kept the stock tubs for the most part.

I run a 335 tire in my mini tub. Had to use the small diameter QA1 springs, shocks stay in the same location. My 335 toyo R888's are 14" wide.

Re: got bored again, mini tub time

How close is the tire to the LCA on these car that have these mini tubs installed? Id love to run a deep dish 11" wide wheel on my car but Im concerned that that they will run or hit the LCA.

I currently run a 4th gen rear but will switch back to a 3rd gen rear or possibly have a new rear shortened if it comes to that.

Don't know if you found carpet yet but check out boat supply stores. Stuff matches automotive carpet pretty good.
