Retro Formula Hood

So my buddy got me thinking the other day about a retro style ram air hood. A lot of people put the 4th gen ram air hoods on thirdgens but im thinking of the original ram air hoods the first gen firebirds/trans ams had. Has anyone done this? Have pics of a firebird with this mod? Im thinking it would look awesome and still be functional. I am linking pics of the hoods to this post for reference.

I like all 3 but im thinking the 71 or the 69 trans am hood would look the best. Let me know what yall think and please post up of how you would do this or if anyone has done this.

Re: Retro Formula Hood

there's no "clean" way to do it that doesn't clutter up the lines of the car, and they won't be fully functional if you don't put them at exactly the right place to take advantage of high pressure areas on the hood.

Re: Retro Formula Hood

If I were to tackle a project like this it could be done a couple of different ways. 1) get ahold of a 1st gen hood and a)mold the hood vents or b) cut the vents out, or 2) if you have some artist talent, sculpt the 1st gen vents on the hood from a base firebird (they sell the same kind of clay in fiberglass shops. Its oil based so it doesn't dry out.) and fabricate a mold to make the new hybrid hood out of a lighterweight material like fiberglass. Either way, mods would have to be done to make it look good on the hood.

Re: Retro Formula Hood

I think you have a great idea. Don't listen to people who say it won't look good or wouldn't be functional , the way the ram air scoops are design they would work. I'm not sure about the first gen hood but the second gen hood is fiberglass. and can be molded onto you hood, or another fiberglass hood. I think it would look sweet and if you add the rear spoiler from that year it would look even better, but that is my opinion . I hope you do it and show pics if you do.

Re: Retro Formula Hood

Someone on this site has the 69 firebird 400 style scoops on the 3rdgen hood and it kinda looks tacked on..
I think your going to have to combine the syles and make some that fit the lines on the 3rd gen hood.

Re: Retro Formula Hood

Not too bad, but I don't think you could pull them straight off a second gen and have them look right.

Yeah, it would take a little work to make them look good, but i feel that it can be done. And they would be fairly functional, expecially with air vents in the rear corners of the hood like on the thirdgen trans ams.

Re: Retro Formula Hood

I'm currently in the process of doing just this but turning the scoops around. I will post pictures as soon as I can.

Re: Retro Formula Hood

Here are some from the begining right after I cut the scoops off the old hood. The extra metal is shaved off and in the process of shaping them to the hood and welding them on.

Reverse is gonna be interesting. Kinda reminds of the gto when they had the rpm gauge in the reverse scoop. Id like to see how it comes out though. Good job doing something different man. Hope all turns out well.

Re: Retro Formula Hood

I tried to do this with a pair of truck scoops I bought for 24 dollars. I think they turned out good. I do get compliments a lot.

To each his own man, dont worry about what anyone says. Im sure its difficult to get the scoops to look like they belong anyways. Good job though. Thanks for the post.
