The lenses don't really come off. The light is one big assembly. In behind the carpeting at the rear is about 7 plastic wing nuts. Unscrew all of these and the whole taillight assembly falls out.

Heat it in the oven for a little while around 200*, carefully use a screwdriver to release the little locking tabs that keep the lens stuck to the housing, before you heat them you'll want to remove all of the screws that you can find.

I recently bought some new old stock GM lenses. You do in fact separate the lense from the body, but you've got to go very slow and the black gunk that seals the two halves might be dried up and like cement.

I wouldnt try to, main reasons i'd take one apart would be to swap the entire lens, or to redo the inside reflective paint.

If you really want it to turn out well:

Get another set of lights to take the red section out of, cut out the amber section from the set you are building, and install the red section with epoxy, then filler/sand them until perfect, tape off the colors and repaint the lines black.

Can you deal with a delamination problem by taking the lights apart?

Not really, thats within the layers of plastic, have to replace the entire lens itself.

All you need is VHT red semi translucent paint, I did the same for my tail lights when doing the sequential tail lights. Just do around 3 coats of red and I did 2 coats of VHT Nightshades after that, all on the outside. If you use stock incandescent bulbs it looks like a really deep orange but with new red LEDs it looks great.

Re: how do you take apart a tail light?

I would love to know that to!
I tinted mine years ago from the inside with translucent red paint.

3 coats inside and 3 coats outside.

I didn't do a great job and now want to go back to stock. Think it makes more sense to buy a new set. I used some super strong caulk to seal them up again. Ugh... No way I can get these open again.

I also contacted KLEAR who made lenses for these cars in clear and tint, red, etc... They said they are getting ready to do a run "soon".
I am on the email waiting list. I also don't need them for at least a couple years, so fine with me. Might not be fine for others.

Classic Industries also shows that they have new inner, outer and full assemblies listed, but they all say "coming soon". I haven't called to ask when soon is. Again, don't care for a couple years.
