z34 steering wheel swap.

Got a z34 steering wheel from the yard this weekend and just put it on! Really think it flows well with the theme of all the other modification I've done to the interior. That stock airbag equipped wheel is one heavy bitch!!! Has really created a lot of play in my steering column.

Re: z34 steering wheel swap.

That looks pretty good! I like the look and feel of the airbag wheels too though, but that looks good. The play in the steering column is adjustable. It takes a fair bit of work though. The wheel, turn signal switch, ignition key cylinder, and upper portion of the column must be removed. There are 3 or 4 E-Torx bolts (size E8 i believe, and must be a 1/4" drive socket to fit in the space) that must be tightened to remove the play. They adjust the "preload" on the tilt knuckle of the column. A real pain to do, but worth it.

How do you remove the z34 wheel? looks like you need to remove the bowtie center peice.

Re: z34 steering wheel swap.

as far as wheel play there are 2 possible causes for this 1 is stated in neilbs post but there are also 2 pivot pins he didn't mention If you have cruise its a 30 second check . directly under the tilt lever theres a plastic pc that just pups off (carefully) under that there is a pin with a threaded hole in the ctr ,sometimes they wiggle out a bit ,if it did push the left side of the wheel twards the dash and tap the pin back flush with the column housing . the left side often goes bad due to using the wheel as a handle when they get out of the car. the rite side almost never backs out

My daily driver is a 91 z34, so I'm used to looking at it every day. Must say I approve

Cool, I will look into it. And yes the cap pops off. I just tugged at it till it broke lose. I've been wanting a z34 for quite awhile myself.

Re: z34 steering wheel swap.

The wheel feels the same as the stock camaro one. Its a bit easier to work around with using the turn signal lever through the wheel and such. and much easier to use the horn lol.

THe wheel looks good. I have always liked the older Z24 steering wheels.
