I know its nothing new or crazy but building this for my 89 formula 350.
Its a big inch small block.
I'm using a LS3 Maf and a adapter harness from blower works.
I have the tubes close now, need to fab a new lid and will be ready to finally start working on the tune..

I remember someone made kinda the same design but split like the SLP CAI systems.

Did you build that box in the old filter can location? This is kinda what I need to get around to doing eventually, but I've been a little reluctant to hack the tray up without having a good plan. I don't want to have the filter so low that going through a puddle becomes a concern.

 

That box is the SLP air box I tell every bird owner to try and find for their cold air kits. It seals to the inner fender opening.
I have had that in the car since 92. Its a formula and at the track, I drop the lower pass side bumper/fender filler to ram air into the pass fender. It picks up a few tenths and mph.

 

Ahh. I see. When I was a little younger and a lot dumber, I cut out the bottom of that filter tray,so I already have a hole there. I'm thinking I'm just gonna box in that corner of the inner fender and 45 the filter out the bottom and into the fender/bumper area. That's interesting you picked up significant gains with the CAI, but then again I guess I've never been sucking cold air while at the track, so I wouldn't know. My IAT's aren't too far out of line though.

 

I think it had more to do with the air PSI/volume of the raming effect at speed than it was being "cold" air but I'd bet that it helped a bit tho.

 

You bastard! If I had TPI I would be on the hunt for a SLP CAI.

Overall it looks good. I might do the same with my carb setup with a hat.

 

Mine is similar, but its a 3.5" and I have a speed density setup.

I'm leaning towards a black semi gloss powder coat finish. Ya know, so it looks factory. lol

 

I would think aluminum would heat up, thus heating up the CAI.

An LS3 meter won't work without a translator of some sort. If you already have this worked out...carry on.

Otherwise, suggest you consult with Blowerworks to get the right meter for your application first before trying to run an LS3 meter.

I'm fairly sure the LS3 meter is what is used in the conversion from blower works. (i'll be using their harness also) I think there is a code or something that is changed also, I'm not into all that fancy computer stuff.... yet.

And you would be correct, If my car sat in traffic after a hard run and with 0 air going thru the intake. (ie motor not running)

I'm fairly certain the IAT or MAT will not show enuff of a difference to matter

I'm sure the $19.99 super highflow chrome E-bay CAIs are waay better! I'll be scrapping this crazy idea asap and ordering the E-bay one today!!! lol

 

Its carbon fiber or nothing man. (Or at least something that looks like carbon fiber. You could prolly get away with carbon fiber pattern stickers).
