I'm looking for a write-up on how to make a custom CAI. Just wondering about the length and angle of the tubing. The previous owner used some crappy slinky hose and its pissing me off every time I pop the hood up. Thanks for the help.

Re: Custom Cold Air Intake Question
I made a Ram Air intake out of two, 6in, 90 degree elbow HVAC ducting from lowes. Gutted the air box and removed the fog lights. (They were chipped and rusted, looked pretty bad) but it works fantastic! Your air filters will get filthy after a summer of driving though. I just cleaned my K&N's a few days ago to get ready for this summer.

Re: Custom Cold Air Intake Question
Sounds like a cool set up. I got some spectre pieces from autozone and it came out great but....it was a little too short and looked weird. It also put the MAF on top of the alternator. I was trying to make a good looking two piece set up. Back to the drawing board.

The best thing to do is get a SLP cold air box for a bird and some 88-89 rubber bellows.

Or you can go all out like i'm doing, no, it's not done yet.

That looks amazing! What kind of tubing is that and are you going to weld it together?

Re: Custom Cold Air Intake Question
Its 4" aluminum and yes it'll be tig welded.
I'll have around 500$ in it and the LS3 MAF conversion by the time I finish.

That's a SLP air box where the aluminum tubing goes in.

Re: Custom Cold Air Intake Question
Dont have a write up but generally just need silicone couplers and start laying out pipe. Decide where you want to run things. I relocated battery to trunk, and cut the battery tray out and ran filter below that on my 89 irocz. I used 3.5" exhaust piping since i cant weld aluminum. Made a custom 3.5" maf out of the stocker internals. Retuned and ran good.

My friend bought a cheap ebay cai kit for his 88 bird and it turned out awesome!

Wow $500!!! That's a little steep for me but I like what you are doing with that set up.

Re: Custom Cold Air Intake Question
I bought this http://vibrantperformance.com/catalo...roducts_id=446 trimmed the filter side and mounted it to the inlet side of my MAF. The fitting for the expansion hose had to be trimmed a little. If I was planning on staying NA I'd make a simple heat shield out of aluminum and foam or cut a hole in the tray, add a 90 degree bend and mount the filter under the tray. Even with just the factory rubber half shield, after a long drive the air temp in that corner is lower than the rest of the engine compartment and it provides a smoother flow to the MAF than the stock rubber hoses. The tubing cost me $25.
