C7 Hood
So I have an extra hood, that's been molded to resemble the Pro Am style hood and was looking at some Sema pics. Thought the C7 hood style was pretty cool.
Thinking I'd give it a try in the mist of my build.

Thinking of using this hood and first ill blend out the nose so its a smooth transition.
using tape to gage and ideal of size, because i dont want it too narrow of too wide either. Proportion seems to make it want to be about 15-16" wide 7-8" long.
next ill make a tray of the evactor (no vent fins, just frame) that i can test and counter sink int the hood.

So, boxed in bottom (pic progress, will post once completed) and the ducting is just about done. Lil fine filler and it'll be done.
Made vent fins out of carbon fiber (1/4" thick x 1.5" blades) and will cut and notch them to fit inside the hood duct at an angle and progressively. You can kinds see in last pic of duct close up what I mean....
Best said they look as if they are going into the hood.
As for questions.
Hood was 88firebird hood, center cut out and used to make Pro Am Style Hood. So its a Full bonnet mod...fiberglass center which is 2layers +core +3 top layers...just about 1/4" thick.
And for weather, well since the C7 have a function extractor from factory why would mine be different?!
Answer, not...its about 21" ish from nose off hood, or 3" set back off my Radiator (which I'm angling to complete the look/function) and the actual duct is 8.5" deep at center.
Once vents are in, there really isn't a massive area for water to directly shower the motor plus the angle is forward. So imagine that...front of motor could get wet...but no more then the puddles underneath.
Wort case could simple install a sponge if needed, but I'll wait and see how it comes out.

No really sure what I want to make the vent fins out of at this point.
But did start on making a temple to work with, just progress pic but figure it help show the concept a little better.
Also I found that it appears the actual C7 have a ducting with in the engine bay that the hood mates with. I would imagine this does also shield the water element as well as complete the heat extract.
So for mine....I'll think about how far I want to go with this, if I'll create something of the same or not.

Thanks, had a little time today to finish the top, final sand out up to 400g.

GM heat extractor hoods the ZL1 Camaro have water collection trays under them. They catch the water and drain it off to the side...it's a pretty slick set-up.

Well...i decided to just make a set of metal fins for now, could always change out later. But for now, I know it'll hold up and allow me to kove forward. Ill play R&D later on the plexi idea.
Simply cut welded and grind from the carbon tempts to a metal set, 1/8" flat stock I think. wasn't gonna keep 5he bladed look till I set them in and just kinda like it...so we will see, but for now. They are done and in....and hood is done as far as the fab side of things.
Hope ya guess enjoyed it. But I probably won't have much to update til the car is painted, so def check out the widebody build as that should be about ready to go.

We should be good, its 21" off nose of hood dropping it right on top of my radiator. Which com paired to stock its a few inches after stock location. Duct is 8" center, which is only til about the TB.
So my guess is that air pulling from under the car will funnel up the front of the motor and out....but can't really say for sure with out a wind tunnel.... lol...

Finally testing on car...had quite the bit to adjust but all ended up well, just had to bevel an area to clear the monster radiator neck and cap ....should have primes this weekend.

I definitaly want to see how you keep the rain out. I'm looking for something for my Daytona Hood vents to keep rain out. I'm thinking of meshing a K&N filter element in between 2 pieces of mesh to hold it on under the hood. I just don't want a downpour sending rain into my open element. That and not to drip so much water into the engine bay. I'll be avoiding all rainy days as much as I can, but it is my daily driver. Keep us posted.

I did think of the along idea but it could build up on edges and then stream or drip in.
In concept I've considered going to carb and fan an intake for it which would cover most of top...I love nelson racing motors and thought to mimic some of the air intake idea.

I'm actually in the middle of converting my GTA hood to resemble the CF Supra hoods, different cut angles and shapes, but the same in a whole in terms of concept. Mesh grill will be inserted from underneath, but the elements, rain in particular, will be a problem. Then again, the areas where I cut aren't really threatening, and the engine bay is getting painted with a clear coat, so the water will just trickle down anyway. My center cut isn't too long towards the center, so the alternator won't be compromised, but then again when your driving the wind may carry it. We'll see though...

I personally love making hood...something about em, just fun.
But you raise a good question. How weak to water are these items, I mean...I've popped hoods and had water on motor from puddles, all sensors are water tight, unless you have a bad wire some where that could short, but alt, are low on some cars?
And a lot of imports have heaviely exposed elements with some of there aftermarket hoods.
I'm not saying we can all run in the rain, hoodless...just saying how much is real fear verse myth fear.

awesome hood!!! love it. my question is where did you get the hood? you said it was molded off the pro-am hood. how was that accomplished? or who did it? i have the pro am hood, but i want it to be fiberglass. please details on that if you dont mind.

Yeah the open vent issue is always something to watch, but its amazing how wet the enginebay can get from rain +/puddles as it is, then again...that's a lot of rain and a storm I wouldn't willing drive in anyway. For this hood, I will have a shield as the alt is the only part up front I'm worried about...that and sqeaking belts. But I will post one I get that solution in place.

As for hood, it is home made (myself) and on my thread there is a lot on it, especially how I did it. Ill try to take a min and write up something a litte better and perhaps more straight forward then my thread.
But its useing the pro am scope like a giant plug to cast off of and then builing your fiberglass part inward. Just in this case I changed a lot of the scope to both take vent and to blend out on hood cleaner then scope does.
Boxing in just make it really solid especially with the vent in the hood.

I've had this open for a while now, looking over the descriptions and pictures every once in a while trying to figure out the details.
I've come to the conclusion that it would be very helpful if you posted some details, almost like a tutorial how to do something like this. I've made 'glass parts before, I've repaired 'glass, I've even done similar stuff with steel and other metals, and I even have a project like this that I would like to do (but haven't because I don't really know where to start/how to make it work). Honestly, when I've done this kind of thing I usually get some combination of a _very_ heavy part and/or cracking (typically both) and typically I don't really have a good idea how to stick the parts together in a way that I know it will stay...

which would be great, because it'll be easier for me to...show step by step in the idea of "how I did" it.
but in the meantime, you know i would answer all questions you had and give you my best advice. I have done "alot" of trans am firebird hoods over the years...never did a camaro hood yet, lol...sorry just kind of funny to realize that.
As for an update with this hood,
It has survived this time with no issues. although i still need to create a "water tray" feature, i havent actually had an issue...not that i drive it in the "rain storms"...but car has been out in the weather.
and have to say, i really this hood.

Nice work! Great custom fab work. I do like the graphic but I think its a bit much... esp bc its so busy the bird and vent gets "lost". I also don't like how you terminated it straight line down the body/hood/bumper but doesnt flow with the curvature of the body lines.
