Re: Rivet nuts

They are incredible handy when you want a more permanent mounting solution than say a self tapping sheet metal screw. I hung new exhaust hangers with them.

Re: Rivet nuts

I have used them with fairly good results. There nice when you need threads in sheetmetal or other thin material. I replaced the factory rivets for the body panels on my Indy Fiero and was very happy with the ability to remove and reinstall without redrilling every time

Re: Rivet nuts

I use them all the time, and have been since my aviation mechanic days. There are different kinds....aluminum or steel, touch countersink or surface mount. Of course, numerous thread sizes.

If you go to a site like mcmastercarr.com and look them up, you can purchase them by the grip length you need.

Re: Rivet nuts

Just wondering if I have the right rivet nut for 1/4 inch material. Would the size 0.150 to 0.312 work?

Re: Rivet nuts

That would seem to be the right size. I used rivnuts to replace the ripped out threaded holes for my radiator air deflector, worked great.

Thank you for your reply. Just to be sure before buy a bag I wonder if Sofa checks out the fabrication thread he would probably know for sure. Thank you again and that size would be my guess. But they are a little pricey so i am trying to find out for sure.

Just buy a kit with various mandrels and a variety pack of rivnuts then you'll have the right size for everything forever.

I have one of these:

Amazon Amazon

Keep in mind that they're not pop-rivets - you don't squeeze the heck out of them or you crush them; just enough to set the insert firmly.

Re: Rivet nuts

I use approx a 1000 a yr with race car builds. As long as you use the proper tool for installing them and only use steel Rivnuts you will have no issues. I use 6mm to 5/8. I purchase them in bulk from Amazon.

Re: Rivet nuts

And I thank you cage for that post. Lots of good info and I have learned a lot about rivet nuts. I plan on getting my 83 Camaro running again so I will need some help along the way...OK then do not crush the heck out of them just to the point were they are secure. Use steel rivet nuts that I can get on amazon. Thanks again for info.....Edward

Digital calipers make quick work of that, I think the manual that came with my rivnut squisher had some drill size suggestions. That or I googled it, can't remember.

Just buy a cheap plastic drill index. Whatever size hole the riv-nut fits snuggly in is the proper drill bit size...

Re: Rivet nuts

If you are doing just a few find the neaest small drill you have and then use a rat tail file to enlarge. You need it snug not loose for the best fit. If you to do more later then get a letter/number drill index of bits fro, Amazon. They will have the correct sizes for most rivnuts. Marsen makes the best rivnuts for the money plus has an online chart for drill size needed for the rivnut. Also the Box will will tell you also. Stay away from the cheap aluminum and smooth barrel rivnets. Good ones are cad plated and have splinesin the grip section.
