Axle Splines

Q: What axles are in my car?

A: 82-88 thirdgens have 26 spine axles. 89-92 cars have 28 spline axles, same as the 4th gen. 89 was a transition year. Some cars have 26, some cars have 28. The only way to know for sure is to open it up and check.

It is true that the axles splines are the same on the 89-92 3rd gens as the 4th gens. But the 3rd and 4th gen axles are not interchangeable. The 4th gen axle is about 2" longer.

Yes, the thirdgen axles are narrower (like chuck said), but the spline count and axle shaft diameter are the same--which means you can use fourth gen ring gear carriers, if you have the third-gen 28 spline axles.

28 spline axles can also be purchased from Moser Engineering (http://www.moserengineering.com/)
