1989 Turbo Trans Am, Available in Pieces
Hi Everyone,
I am posting this for a good friend. This is a very interesting deal for the right person and I hope that it goes into the right hands.
Do you have a sport coupe with 2.8L that you want to add bolt in reliable factory power? Maybe an LG4 car or one with CFI that needs an upgrade? Or the roller you have had kicking around for a while that you bought for cheap $$....
My friend has an 89 TTA that he has owned for the better part of 10 years. Currently, the car has 41k miles. He bought it with around 20k and used it as a daily driver for a while. It has spent time outside so some items are slightly weathered (its not a show car), but it still always starts right up, goes like hell, and is reliable. It gets driven often, rain or shine, and in my opinion it’s a very quick car.
He has decided to make this into a full-out race car. Nearly everything will be replaced to do this, it is something that he has wanted to do for a long time. He is selling mostly everything off of the car: The full 3.8L turbo motor, transmission, rear end, full interior, most of the body panels, all the TTA specific stuff that is pretty impossible to find, especially as a complete package. Car has front aftermarket lowering springs, original GM floor mats, aftermarket slotted / vented rotors, special TTA / notchback type rear seats, the TTA dash, etc. Wheels are nice, factory radio and radio controls work (cassette too!), console is nice. The drivers seat is worn out. Car does have some motor upgrades. Body panels are solid and mostly straight (I think the RF fender has a small dent).
Here is the catch. He would like to sell this as a whole package, not just one part or another here and there. Just about everything is available except for the bare body. Come over, see and go for a ride so you can verify that it runs well and has everything that you want. If you decide you want it, we’ll pull it apart and you can help if you'd like.
The price for everything is $8k. Motor, Trans, Rear end, full interior, harness, subframe with all brake components, lights, body panels if you need them (he is going fiberglass), glass, etc etc. How often do TTA full packages come up without having to spend the $$ to buy a whole TTA?
To answer a few questions:
1) Why cut up a TTA and not some other random 3rd gen? Because it’s his car, its solid and what he wants to do. Please no hate posts
2) Can I buy the whole thing? Nope, he wants the shell to build. He definitely will not sell the whole car, please don’t ask.
3) What number TTA is it? I don’t know.
4) Can I buy just the interior screws? Or the dash cluster? Or the factory exhaust tips? Sure, but you need to buy it all He doesn’t want to get into selling just a few pieces here and there, shipping, etc because his space is at a premium. He might consider it but the answer is probably not.
5) Can I pull it apart over a 6 week timespan? No, once it gets pulled apart, we need to finish it in approximately a weekends time due to space constraints and the body will be shipped to the builders shop.
Car is located in Mass.
Serious inquires only please, thanks!
I will get some pictures of it this weekend.

Has he thought of just selling the car as is and getting a shell to build up? Sounds like less work.

Yep, that's basically it. He already owns the car and selling the parts give him some extra cash to pay for some bits of the new setup. He will keep it white with the decals, though over lightweight body panels as applicable.

oh well better than being crushed or let to rot. Glws. Will we ever get to hear of the project as it progresses? It may not be completely welcomed but there have been rarer cars modified to this extent.

Re: 1989 Turbo Trans Am, Available in Pieces
So take a car that's fairly rare and destroy it for the sole purpose of being able to say I have a TTA, even after pretty much everything associated with it is gone?
Selling the car as a whole and then purchasing a rolling chassis would still leave him cash to build something. Plus save the hassle of having to pull a car apart. And leave a historic car in one piece.

Re: 1989 Turbo Trans Am, Available in Pieces
There are plenty of much rarer cars that have been modified to the owners tastes, and it's not the only TTA that has been parted out of the 1555 made. At the end of the day, it's his car to build into his dream ride. And yes, I'm sure he'll make a post about the build in the future.

Would he trade for one of these & some "product"? I'm sure he's seen one before.

Re: 1989 Turbo Trans Am, Available in Pieces
Lol that's funny ****. As thirdgenners, of course we are going to bemoan an act like this. Our generation doesn't get a ton of recognition, generally, but we have two production models of our cars that will always get respect and were at the pinnacle of performance and technology at the time and for their price range. As a Camaro guy, I wish there was a Camaro in that exclusive group, but oh well. The Turbo Trans Am and the Firehawk. Seeing one, in my eyes, destroyed leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, as I'm sure it does others' as well. However, it is better than being crushed and it is his car, so it's all up to him. Hopefully most of these parts, especially the drivetrain, can go to someone restoring their TTA.

Just curious. Does your friend need to have these parts sold before moving on to the rest of the project?

He was hoping to. Its a matter of space, he has limited garage space and doesn't want to tie it up with parts. For now, he is still using it as-is and will probably continue to until a deal is made.

Re: 1989 Turbo Trans Am, Available in Pieces
Unless someone wanted to buy a big ticket item like the motor, he's going to hold off on selling smaller stuff like the seats. His preference is to sell it all in one shot to someone looking to build a third gen with a turbo 6 platform.

If he wants to sell it all at once, just sell the whole car. Easier, and for the money you can get a nice roller to destroy.

Re: 1989 Turbo Trans Am, Available in Pieces
Looking to sell my TTOP leather car. Clear title. My engine and trans are in my 89 TA ASC convertible. To all you guys making stupid coments, i bought the 89 TTA and 89 convertible to make a TTA convertible since they only made 3 and Rich wants $140 000 for Jeff Beitzels car. I figure i can do it for less and build it the way i want...since i spent the money and bought both cars. The TTA had 100,000 miles on it so it's not a low mile original. It's #364 and the convertible is a 89 350 which were less produced.

Re: 1989 Turbo Trans Am, Available in Pieces
Hello; I rather try to buy the complete drivetrain; upgraded engine, with turbo, heads, intercooler, wiring harness, headers, with the tranny and drivetrain for big parts. I also need the rear turbo bar emblem, steering wheel, radio, consoles, etc., etc. If he can get me price $$ for these parts even better and faster for me to buy. Send me a pm asap. Thanks!!

Why doesn't he just trade someone for a roller and get some cash for his project?
This really makes no sense at all.
