I have a low mileage ‘85 Trans Am. Original 305 auto 9 bolt rear. Appears to have 350 swap mild mods. Not running. Color is red, and wheels would not be included. If interested in anymore info let me know.

Re: Looking to buy back 1985 Trans am (sold in the late 80's)

If you have the VIN or License Plate number, DMV might (for a fee) advise the current owner that you request he contact you. That old, slim chance.

I feel your pain! I'd like to get back my 1970 mach 1, i sold in NY in 1974. I only have the old plate # and never bothered contacting DMV.

Re: Looking to buy back 1985 Trans am (sold in the late 80's)

Hi there! I absolutely feel your pining for your old friend. Coincidentally...I’m trying to do the same with my beloved 85 that I had to sell a few years ago while I was caring for my ailing father.
What I have learned is that the DMV (at least in my state) has strict laws about releasing any owner information. I was able to gather some small tidbits by purchasing a carfax report. I have now hired a private investigator (not as expensive as it sounds!) to hopefully locate and contact the current owners.
The carfax info stopped as of November 2016, so I’m trying not to think the worst. My fingers are crossed that she’s a yard ornament somewhere, and not crushed or parted out.
I wish the best for you in your search. Please update when/if your Bird comes back home!!

Re: Looking to buy back 1985 Trans am (sold in the late 80's)

Finally found one that was an exact clone but of course forgot to take a picture of the vin and then it sold , it was really beat up though it sat for 13 years and it needed a new gas tank pump weather striping and interior supposedly had 40000 original miles ,very unfortunate still looking for one if anyone has leads on a white 85 trans am with red accent stripes ttops grey interior and the black wrap around spoiler it may have had factory DE1 louvers i dont remember but it used to have them

The PI was able to locate my Bird, and just as I suspected, she was a statue in the yard.
I talked them into selling her back to me and she’s at the shop now trying to recover some of her dignity.
If you haven’t tried the private investigator route, naturally I’d highly recommend it!!!

Thanks for sharing in my reunion joys!!
As far as Carfax goes...you might be right when you say that the records stop in 1994. But it “should” show a reason. Like an accident or salvage or junkyard sale. Either way, you will know, and it might be worth the 40 to ease your mind. And if you know someone who works at a car dealership, they can usually run a carfax for free!
Again, I’m not sure how each state does things, but on my Bird’s carfax it showed the county she was registered in and a title number when she changed hands. Apparently the title number was what my PI needed when he went to the dmv.
Splurge for the carfax! Life is short, take the chance!!
Fingers still crossed for you

Re: Looking to buy back 1985 Trans am (sold in the late 80's)

Welp ladies and gents thats the end of my story i recently purchased a carfax found out that the car was later sold again 5 years after i sold it and i was right the guy i sold it to was from queens and then he sold it to another guy in queens then in 1995 it got into a major accident then it was passed inspection in 99 then following that it says that it went to a auto recycler in 2004 the transmission and engine where gone and it says the same thing in 2005 and then it stops so after 14 years its probably been stacked on a car and they just pick and pull parts off sad ending to my dads beloved ride i could probably find it have a mangled frame sitting on my lawn but i feel the chances are slim to none of it still being in a restorable condition but thanks so much for the help and advice maybe one day ill pursue in calling all the auto recyclers in new york city lol but till then its still gonna probably sit there i hope that whoever is looking for there past car does not get this fate and that there car is on a nice lawn or drive way thank you again.

Dang. I’m so sorry that your story didn’t have a better ending.
I think if it was me, I’d let it go at this point. I know if I had discovered a similar carfax with mine, that’s what I’d do. And even if I’d found an exact clone of mine, I wouldn’t want it. It wouldn’t be the same.
But...maybe there’s a bird out there waiting to be rescued by you? Maybe it’s the opposite of yours, red with white stripes?? Or maybe your path might lead you in a completely different direction...you might find similar joy in a Datsun, or a Delorean, or a Metropolitan! Who knows?
Best of luck to you
