Alright, just wanted to test the waters here and see if anyone is interested in getting together for a group purchase on a Precision Industries 9.5" converter.

This will be my next mod on the IROC and it'd be nice if I could get some kind of a deal with one of the forum sponsors on the converter, and a shift kit to go along with it.

Thunder Racing is selling them for $734 for a lock-up style converter for the 700R4, including a stall speed of your choice.

Before I start sending out emails to these companies, I'd like to altleast find out how many people would be interested in doing this.

I just coughed up $800 canadian on ordering a set of SLP headers, so money's a bit tight right now.

I'm thinking sometime at the end of this month or early next month (basically 3-4 weeks) would be a good time to order a new converter

I would love to but i have 2 problems. 1, I don't know if I want to use the 350I planned on and 2, that is a ton of money to dish out when I don't have it. Otherwise I would be interested.

I know they are, that's why I want to get another for my Iroc. I shaved 6/10's on my LT1 with a 2800 stall, and I know for a fact, a third gen can shave off atleast 3-5 tenth's MINIMUM with a 26-2800 stall. I've never seen anything less than that - EVER ! on a third gen. The vigilante's are dollar for dollar, the best mod you can make.


So, I thought I'd give this one last try and see how many people would be interested in getting together for a group purchase. From my experience in the past, it usually takes 5-6 guys to get the ball rolling in order for these companies to even consider giving a discount.


So, if there's anybody here interested, let me know. They go for $735 normally + whatever discount we get on top of that.

How hard of an install is a torque converter? Sounds like something to have the shop do

I need a clue on the discount. Are we looking at 10%(you can do that anywhere) or 30-40% ?? 30-40 makes it worth sitting on the shelf all winter.

 

id deff be in for one as long as i can get one for the v6 trans(27 spline). is price gonna vary with stall speed?

 

10-15% is the typical discount price for group purchases. If you're waiting for a 40% discount, don't hold your breath 'cause it aint ever going to happen. (It would be nice though, but seriously, no discount is ever that high)

I'll contact a few companies later today and see what kind of prices they can give us. I'll let you guy's know when I know.....

 

I sent an email to ThunderRacing asking if they were interested in starting a group purchase with us.

Right now, they have two options. The first is just a stand-alone converter for $735. The next option is the converter and a Transgo shift kit package for $810.

I'm leaning towards the package deal right now because as with any high-stall converter instalation, your transmission's shifting will go sloppy. A sift kit will remedy that and provide you with nice firm shifts again.

In my case, it's better to buy both at once and just hit two birds with one stone, sort of speak. The tranny has to be pulled out anyway so that would be the best time to throw in the shift kit.......


Anyways, I'll get back to you when ThunderRacing let's me know if they're interested....

 

I was assuming anyone ready to spend $$ for a converter already had a transmission ready for it. keep us posted on any gp. It is getting to where it will be another spring before installed anyway.

 

Put me down fot the Torque Convertor after the first of the year, say Febuary. This way I can get Christmas out of the way and be ready for it.

I have to keep looking around guy's as I finally got an email response from ThunderRacing (one of our sponsors) and they basically said that because they don't make much profit on these converters to begin with, they're not able to work out any kind of a group discount for us.

I'll keep looking and will keep you all posted. If anyone else want's to help look around and send out a few e-mail's, that would be great...

 

this post is a little late, wish i would have seen it before to tell you about it, but i just got mine from ThunderRacing during their "freaky friday" sale on the 13th. 10% of $735 for $661.50

i just got it tuesday, its nice and purdy. their next 10% off sale is in April as far as i know.

ThunderRacing responded to my "Group Purchase" inquery a little while ago and basically told me that they can't do anything with the price as far as giving us a "deal" because they don't make too much of a profit off the Precision Industries converters at the prices they normally sell them for, so any discount would mean they basically wouldn't make any profit.

That's how I understood it anyways....

They had 10% off of everything, even the AFR heads listed for $1399, thats $140 bucks off. i would have order more stuff at the same time from them to take advantage of the sale, but i found out about it on the day of the sale so i was not prepared with everything that i needed, but i guess its a just a part of their marketing that they lost some money on the tq convertor, but in a turn around they got me as a customer and im probably going to buy some more stuff from them where they will make money. i probably would have never ordered anything from them if they hadn't had this sale, but since they had good service and all, they made a new customer for Thunder Racing Track Day 2006

 

When you say you can cut anywhere from .5 of your Et's, this is all do to being able to launch harder with the stall right?

 

Pretty much yeah.

The right stall converter will put your motor in it's power-band a lot faster than the stock coverter will and so long as you know how to launch the car properly (or run sticky tires) you'll get amazing results. Seriously, a torque converter with a properly matched stall speed will transform just about any car. It really is a night and day difference. Dollar for dollar, it's the best mod you can do to a car in my opinion.

I shaved off 6/10's with my LT1 Formula (on street tires mind you) which was a bigger improvment than what I got with worked-over heads and a bigger cam

 

also with the P.I. Vigilante it has a higher torque multiplication ratio that any other convertor.

 

Clint off of CCFBG got a custom one from a dude in Arthur. I asked him about what stall it was, quality etc. He couldn't tell me much about them as he was having it installed and didn't see it or know much about it. The price is what got me. $450 a pop. His stall speed is 3000 as well. If you were to price out a stall from PI or anywhere else with a speed of 3000, you'd be paying at least $500us. I'll find out more about this and leave a message here.
