Group Purchase on Greasable upper hinge repair kits

A member of TGO requested for me to open a GP for the greasable upper hinge repair kits, which I've done. Once the quota of 20 kits is met I'll get them ordered. Remember, you MUST order under the GP part number to get the better price. If you're planning to do a hinge repair on your car, this would be the time to get them.

He makes the hinge repair kits. But Lon is selling them at a discount with the group purchase. Thanks Lon!

You won't be billed until Lon get's the minimum order of 20 and the parts come. Once Lon gets the 20 orders and the parts come and the parts are shipped you will be billed. So order the parts now.

Re: Group Purchase on Greasable upper hinge repair kits

If I go in on this, will I need any other parts?

I think the door spring is good, but I'll replace the lower hinge while I'm in there.

Re: Group Purchase on Greasable upper hinge repair kits

We're not clairvoyant, at least I'm not. You have the advantage of having the car there to inspect the hinge. Does the door detent arm jump on the door detent roller or make any popping noises as you close the door? That would indicate you need to replace the door detent roll & pin. You may find after doing the repair that you need to align the door due to the long heavy door bending the door hinge. I sell a door alignment tool. You won't know for certain until after you've done the hinge repair if you need the tool or not. Do you own a Dremel tool or air-operated die grinder? You'll need one of these to grind off the heads of the old upper door hinge pins.

What is your strategy to hold the door in place while you do the repair? I use a door hanging tool which jacks under the bottom of the car, has an arm that comes up to hold the top of the door and a post with a door latch pin to hold the door at the door latch. But that isn't something that everyone has in their tool inventory. Some tools that my customers commony used to hold the door are a floor jack (with rags or old towels covering the saddle to protect the paint at the bottom of the door). Someone can hold the door steady while you're doing the repair, but that gets tedious. One customer recommended using a ladder. Put the "A" of the ladder over the door, then stuff the gap between the door and ladder with towels. Some customers have an engine hoist (aka cherry picker) and use a nylon strap to hold the door up as they repair the door. Of course if these are beyond you, another strategy is to drop off the hinge repair kits along with your car at a body shop to perform the job.

Will probably use my engine hoist so it'll balance the door upright if I properly position a strap. I'll check out the other items you mentioned. If a part is reasonably cheap, I normally replace everything while I'm in there and plan on having to drive another vehicle for a few days as I know I'll forget something

I always overbuild, rather then half-*** everything.

Re: Group Purchase on Greasable upper hinge repair kits

Door detent spring is $5.00 bucks very reasonable. I bought two just in case. I may go the body shop route for repair. Right now I just need the parts. Figure everything else out when the parts arrive. Lon how many orders have been made so far?

5 so far. 15 more kits to go, or 8 days. Whichever comes first. I've decided to hold the GP open 30 days, so those of you on the fence will need to make a decision. The GP closes 3/15 and the order placed on the 16th.

I'm in! Just have to wait till I get home to order. Damn filters on the work computer.

Lon, I noticed you now have power window motors, but you don't have a manufacturer listed. I have basicly seen 3 different motors offered, original GM replacements, cheap chinese replacements, and aftermarket "equals" to original GM. Any input?

Re: Group Purchase on Greasable upper hinge repair kits

GP has closed. The order will be placed today. I'll let you know when it is ready to ship.
Thanks to the four customers that decided to take advantage of the GP. I find it strange that you guys want a GP, yet the actual orders don't back up that fact. Regardless, I won't hold up those four customers and have closed the GP.

Thanks, Lon

Sorry.....It isn't that we don't want/need them, it's just bad timing for a GP.

Some people are waiting on tax refunds, others are having to pay not only income tax but property tax as well.

I'm one of those who have to pay this part of the year, so buying "toys" is not an option for me. In a couple more months, I can order some. But hinges are not most only need right now, nor my biggest need. So since my doors open & close, they aren't a high priority at this point, despite how it takes me 2-3 pulls EACH time I close the door & they are rubbing my lower rockers bare. Good thing that's just plastic (ground fx) not steel that would rust from being bare.

Sorry I can't accept a two until the order has shipped. The order was placed just now, so we're talking about a minumun of 1 week before your card would have been billed. Then you'd have the float on the card depending on when your closing date occurs.

Oh well, maybe next year!

Not even sure what you mean by "card" or "float on the card".

I was just trying to explain to you why you haven't gotten more orders, this time of the year. That's all.

WHAT!!!!! I've been waiting for a reply to my question on your power window motor!!!!! I was waiting for that before I paid for my order! Please contact me ASAP! I've PM'd and posted my question in this thread, and just tried to call the # on your websight.

EDIT: I just "checked out" and paid for my order (without the power window motor)

How is the group order going lon? I think you said the manufacturer was having some trouble with the hinges or something? I tried to send you a email. But there must be something wrong with my email or yours.
Thanks

I'm up for getting a pair, if the timing was right for my wallet.

Re: Group Purchase on Greasable upper hinge repair kits

I just installed a greasable kit on my olde 86 Iroc, the door is perfect..now
The job was easy, but had to weld the lower door-side pin bores because the pin was 'loose'. so i took the door off with a comalong, worked nice.
i did take a few pics.. A Pain in the Door !

Re: Group Purchase on Greasable upper hinge repair kits

I'm opening a new GP for the greasable and non greasable hinge repair kits. The GP's will close 11/14. The hinge repair kits will be ordered 11/15. I'll let you know when the kits have arrived and are ready to ship. If paying by credit card, your order won't be billed until the item ships.
