which year to buy

I am looking to buy and build a 3rd gen camaro. I have a 1st and want to build a 3rd. I need some help on what year. I can make any year look like I want to, so I am more concerned about the suspension and drivetrain. What are the pros and cons of the different years. Is it better to build and IROC or IROC-Z or maybe a 91 or 92. I want to build one that will really run but still be streetable. My 69 will have about 425 plus 100 more for nitros. I would like to get about the same for a 3rd gen. Is it better to go with a supercharger? I know very little about the 3rd gen cars and options. I have been told that the 5 speed trannys and the rearends will not hold up to a lot of hp. Can you put a LT1 or even an LS1 in one of them with a T56? I want a good ride that is fast. With all the owners out there, there has to be some factors to consider. Help me out.

It all depends on what you want, and what you're willing to spend. I'd say look for a 90-92 Z28, Formula, Trans AM, or GTA with the L98 350. They're all automatics, and most weren't available with ttops, but they're the fastest, most stable, most rattle free, easiest to work on, most dependable, and best looking cars, of the entire run. They also tend to be the most expensive.

well, i got my 1990 Formula 350 for $3000, and im pretty happy with it. It rattles ALOT less than my friends 86 TA. Plus with a formula you are guarunteed the WS6 suspension (a very good foundation for suspension builds).

Drew's right...the '90-'92 cars with their speed density metering and more chassis "goo" are the best overall cars in terms of a platform to build with...

I wouldn't call them the best LOOKING though 11 years later, I still can't get used to the '91-'92 'Bird front end, or the hideous rear spoiler on the Z28s. I've tried and tried, but it ain't happening...

Gimme an '88-'89 IROC, or '87-90 Formula. The IROCs in those years had slightly more attractive wheels IMO, a little more power, dual cats available in '89, and didn't have the '90-'92 style dash...

As for Formulas, well, I just like the style a lot now that I own one! There's something purposeful looking about a Formula...domed hood, GTA/TA spoiler, big wheels and tires, but no fat added by body cladding. I like it!

I concur with Drew, but also add a 90 IROC and 91-92 Z28's to the list.

I personally like the newer gauges that came in 90-92 Camaro's. I could do without the yellow, though.

I agree with all about the 90-92 Z28 with 350, but if you can find a 90 IROC they are rare and possibly worth more.
