E9Z : SPEEDOMETER KEY (DELETE)
can someone please clarify?

my first guess was the key that says Mph/Kmph onthe speedo, but i have that, so that theory didnt really work.

My theory is that we are not meant to know what this code means.... further that no one knows what it means and it is to remain a "great RPO mystery".
My best guess is that if you need Kilometers you got a "speedo key" and if you needed Miles they "deleted" it.

Would be a good guess but I have KM/h & the speedo key (delete); your theory that we weren't meant to know is more accurate.Originally posted by MikeInAZ

Well there as many speedo key deletes as there are rear end gears, and I'd guess that no matter what you got a speedo delete because for one reason or another your car has what ever gears it has because of it's drive train options....I'm not making sense am I
Let me think of a better way to word that and I'll be back

i could be wrong but i think it has to do with mph on one side of the speedo and kph on the other. cars without this rpo would have a needle on the kph side also ive had it both ways one my two 84 z's

You have what is known as the double-pointer speedometer. 1984 was the last year it was used, and I'm pretty sure the mysterious E9Z doesn't have anything to do with the ol' "double pointer".

I have a E9Z as well. I also have a E5Z: Speedometer adapter (delete).....and I was curious as heck as to what these were too?? My speedo is labeled with both mph and kmh
**EDIT**
After doing a little search around the board I found another "hypothesis" as to what the heck this could be. For example my car came with a variety of pkgs.
WW4: Appearance PKG, Aero #4
W62: Ornamentation, Aero PKG
W68: Merchandised PKG, Firebird, Sport Appearance
1SB: Option Package 02
There are couple others scattered on my build sheet. Now I know that some of these are external, and some are like floor mats and etc. But this seems to make sense:
If for example you ordered your car with a certain pacakage the affected instrumentation, or was related in anyway....you would be able to save money by deleting certain options. My car only has a 120 mph speedometer. Perhaps anyone with a E5Z & E9Z does not have a 140 mph speedo??!! How does this theory hold up....and hopefully it made sense.

I've been giving this some thought. Maybe the speedo's key(way) was deleted when GM switched over to the electronically controlled speedometer (ie not cable operated)???
That was not until MUCh later. I know I saw some 84's with the option and they did not have electric speedometers

I also have 4 different codes 6ZW,7ZW,8NL,9NL they all come up as "spring, computer selected ......." for each wheel, but what exacly is this???

Based on options ordered and the way the car was built, the computer selected the best springs for the option build combination.Originally posted by PonyKiller87

i have 84 S/E with:
E5Z : SPEEDOMETER ADAPTER (DELETE)
E6E : SLEEVE, SPEEDOMETER GEAR
it has normal 85 mph non kpm speedo, IE not a double pointer like is in the maro with same RPO code...
