How many good 3rd gens left?
How many good 3rd gens left?
Knowing that about 2million 3rd gens were produced over 11 years, and half of them were base model(4&6 cyl) and the last 3rd gen produced would be 10 years old. Also alot of 3rd gens were abused, smashed up and rusted out or symply old and worn out.
Knowing this how many good condition 3rd gens do you estimate are still out there?

ALOT!
I think there are quite a few "high milers" left on the road, you can tell the difference from a "hobby" car and a "driver" (as in I just drive it I don't even know what it is)...
As for the nice ones Z's, Irocs GTA's, TTA's, 1le's, B4c's, TA's, etc. they are disapearing FAST!

Well, there's hidden treasures lying around...guess you could say mine is one of them
It looks a little rough (rust here and there, faded hood and spoiler), but drives like a dream, and the inside is near-mint. Never abused, no accidents...and I got it for $1,000 when the original owner traded it in. I love working at a dealer!!
This one will never be low mileage, but I hope to keep my Z down there...so hard to do though. Its too much fun not to drive!

Jason E,
I spotted this 85 Z28 today. They wanted $1200 dollars for it. It was a complete waste case. Tires were bald. All the emblems were missing. Interior was shot. Radio was gone and the speakers were hanging out in rear. Had 166,000 miles on it.
Its getting harder and harder to find 3rd Gen cars.

good is a relative term
If your looking for a low mileage imaculately kept, untampered with completely stock car..... i wouldn't guess too many, and the ones that are out there.. as for the price.. bend over.
Good as a hobby car, somthient to toy with.. meaning reasonably strait body panels, decent interior, round 100k miles, requiring some basic 100K maintainance.. as for them there are an aweful lot of em, ranging from the mid 80's through the 90's, but if your looking for that pristine, untouched car... it's not for you.
can usually get them for reasonable prices as well, 2500 bucks will get you something that requires minumum effort to have a nice looking low effort to keep up car for the most part.
the best ones are the ones that fall into the ..... that'd be a great racecar.... ~ good~ category..
mid 80's V-6's low options, basic interior hardtops.. that's the ones to look for

I think that their are plenty of nice (low mileage, un modded) thirdgens out there. Like stated, about 2 million were made. Basically they are like any other used car. You really have to do some looking to find the right one. I am always suprised how often (at shows, on ebay, and even on this sight, raptoryfm660r's car for example) that these low mileage cars turn up. I agree that the prices are starting to climb for these cars, but I feel that the supply is out there (at least right now, in 10 years who knows), it just takes plenty of looking. To find them.
Examples: One town over is a 92 1LE Z28, w/ 2,000 miles on it. up the street is an 89 1LE Iroc w/ 5,000 miles on it. Last weekend I saw an 83 CFI T/A w/ 40k miles on it (aswell as a dozen other 3rdgen birds at the Pontiac show). I can cite several other examples too
So basically if you want one of these diamonds, all you have to do is work your a$$ off and search! How many are left, who knows!?
All I know is I want one
(atleast) As soon as I have the $ and space I will be looking for a low mileage survivor TransAm.

I modded mine.
First, I took the decals off with my wifes hair dryer sometime in the summer of 1986.
Second, put a new :hail: Delco Mem-Calibrator at 1870 miles on 8/18/89. Nice improvement over stock. Kept old calibrator and put it in box new one came in just in case I need to go back to stock.
Third, added AC-Delco PF-35 oil filter for more oil capacity.

IROCZTWENTYGR8,
I have to get an enclosed car carrier first.
The Z28 has never been in or seen rain. I don't want know rust on the axle or nowhere.
It would be a cry-in shame for it to get rusty now. There was some rust on the steering arm though, but it came from the factory like that and to get it ready for a car show I need to wipe it down from all the dust over the years and spider webs underneath the car.

Right now, there are plenty of 3rd Gens out there. In a few years, that will change. I looked for 5 years for my 87 Z-28 Convertible(Willie has this one documented). So the moral of the story is to 'KEEP THE FAITH', one day, we will all have a rare ride.

Hey, I wasn't intentionally excluding 92GTA...I saw his response, but I figured someone else would nail him by now. Guess it has to be me
I don't care what anyone says, thats a shallow thing for someone who loves these cars to say. These cars as investments?? Sorry guys...you own the WRONG cars. Take it from an econ major...throw some money in a Roth IRA if you want an investment.
These cars are meant to be driven, enjoyed, and preferably, preserved...not thrown out so some of us can watch our "investments" go up in value

It could use a drive every once in a while too, so getting out a little more will be a good thing.

You mean if I go I could add to my collection of trophies which is one. I got this one back in 1965-66 for being League Champions at the Youth Bowling Assoc.
Another trophy is a need not a want.

Jason E is right about these cars being investments. Enjoy yours cars how ever you want. I like mine sitting in the garage.
As far as investments for your Roth IRA if you know nothing about the stock market go for an index fund. If you want to invest for the long term gain and make higher returns some simple stocks to get into for the next 15 years would be GE, PFE,XOM ,PG,VZ, 10--15% cash and throw in a little ASA gold shares just in case.
My IROC-Z has had a better return than Enron though.
