Functional Hood
Hey Guys... a buddy of mine has an 84 T/A HO, has a functional "power-buldge" hood. I just did a search and learned that apparently this was offered stock-- I was under the impression that '75 was the last time that trans ams had functional hoods... Anyone have some more information about the functional cowl induction "power-buldge" style hood? As in how many were made, what years were they offered, only with the L69 package? etc.
Thanks

In 1982 the off-center hood scoop, (power bulge, power blister) came with the LU5 (crossfire) motor.
There is a servo that activates the damper on WOT, thus inducing the cold air from the high pressure zone that’s at the hood / windshield transition.
The style was based on the 80-81 T/A hoods.
I’m not sure how the hood evolved from there but at least that's how it got is start as far as 3rd gens are concerned.
I recall 80-81 Z-28 hoods having something similar.

My 84 LG4 Trans Am has a functional hood like that.

1982 LG4 - 39925 made (hood is sealed off. the long honeycomb piece shown above is a solid piece of plastic instead)
1982 LU5 - 13037 made (functional)
1983 LG4 - 22062 made (functional)
1983 LU5 - 9206 made (functional)
1983 L69 - 662 made (functional)
1984 LG4 - 30286 made (functional)
1984 L69 - 25088 made (functional)
A couple of notes: All 3 levels of Firebird (Firebird, Firebird S/E, and Firebird Trans Am) could have the LG4 V8 for all those years if the owner chose to upgrade to it, but only the Trans Am had it standard and had the "power bulge" hoods which were functional, listed above. Also, all 1987 - 1992 Firebird Formula's have the same exact hood, but they were all sealed off like the 1982 LG4. The LU5 engine was optional only and available on Trans Am only and had a unique setup. It's similar to the one shown above, except the hole cutouts are not round, they are a diamond shape and the air cleaner lid is a totally unique oblong design with 2 small air filters inside.
This covers Trans Am's only. 82-83 Camaro LU5's also had a functional hood of a totally different design but had the same LU5 oblong air cleaner with 2 filters, and I'm not sure if any other Camaro V8 got it, but if it did, it was probably in 82-83.
Hope this helps

OH MY ***!!!
Look what I just found... An aircleaner for a functional cowl induction setup... AND HOLY SCHNIKES!!! someone bid on it with my ebay id... Oh WOW!!!
Ok, so I picked up a 83 T/A hood, with the duct, solenoid, and all the hardware, and the vacuum switch, etc for $125, about 3 weeks ago. Then the other day I picked up the aircleaner off ebay.
But the best part is... I don't have anything to use this stuff on, it's just going to sit in my garage with all my other parts, till someday when I either buy a carbed/tbi firebird or someone offers me a buttload of money for the complete setup. The original intention was to have the hood as a backup, but then I pieced together the cowl induction...

Found the pictures:

I bought this in about 2007 I believe off of Ebay. I kept finding Crossfire ones and I finally stumbled across a complete TBI compatible one and paid around $90 for it then.
It is really cool to have the Power Bulge Hood functional like the older brother Firebirds.
