About this radio....??????
Does anyone have this radio? How may out there? I have a car radio guy who says that he remembers the story on this unit and has a permenant fix for them. Seems according to him that the radio's were recalled in early 1987. I know what this one is called-got the owners manual/chassis repair manual from Harms. All the replacement units were installed with ***** (note that this one has only push buttons). Just trying to get a fix on whether on not this is a keeper for a restortion.......... Thanks to Vadar for the Pix.......

Yeah Freeze, that appears to be the recall replacement radio. I was just trying to get a feel for how many of the ALL pushbutton radios may be out there. Notice that the radio in my thread has no *****,just push buttons....thanks for the reply...

The first radio came in the premium systems in the Pontiacs through 1987. In 88 the premium system (at least in the GTA) got the radio in the last pic.

The middle one with the black face and ***** was standard issue in a lot of Chevy and buick cars. Most often the chevies got black ***** and the buicks got chrome.

I seriously doubt that they were recalled. GM only does recalls with safety-related issues, so unless it had a propencity to explode or something of that nature, they wouldn't have recalled it. Since I'm not aware of any exploding radios, I'd have to say no.

Not sure why or even if it's true....My radio guy thinks it was. Maybe it was discontinued after only a few installations. I don't know. According to him, notice what appears (go to picture in first thread) to be a plate with pushbuttons for volume instead of *****, the guts under the plate did not hold up for whatever reason and it was recalled/discontinued for serviceability problems. When I first got my car, the radio did not work. Clock did work as well as the tape deck. The radio guy was very surprised to see me with one and gave me the story. I know that I've never seen a 3rd gen with one. I'm sure there are some out there, I've just never seen one in a 3rd gen firebird or camaro.

I'm just trying to get some info on it and see if it is rare or not.

I had this radio in my Camaro. I got it from a '86 TA with digital dash or otherwise fully loaded. I bought back in '87 since it was totaled.

Here's the only picture I have of it

Never heard of a recall. I've had a car with one of those radios in it since 1988, and never heard about a radio recall. They are pretty crappy radios though, from bad components to bad soldering.

If it doesnt work, its best resting place is the nearest round file.

Oh yea, and its far from 'rare'. There is another application that used them as well, I just cant remember what. I know because the buttons werent red in color but white instead. If I remember, I'll post.

Yep. It had an electrical short in the computer or something around there. It was enough that it was totaled. That happened back in '93.

It could still start and drive around but they totaled it anyway. It was a pretty nice car. Fully loaded. I think the only options it didn't have was an auto, rear wiper, and limited slip. HO 5spd, Lear Siegler seats, tops, power everything, equalizer cassette, etc.

Was my first car and had lots of fun learning and playing
