If it's really a 383, then it is a modified or replacement motor, and as long as it runs without any problems and the rest of the car is in good shape, I would probably buy it.....what are the rest of the details on the car?

They most likely took out the 350 and stroked it.

Thing is, be wary of buying someone else's work, you don't know how good of a mechanic they are , unless you know them personally.

To have a 1/4 est we need more specs, cam/heads/gears/tc or stick, stuff like that.

Exactly....you don't want to buy the car, and then, a couple of weeks later, spin a bearing or something equally irritating. Ask the guy how long the 383 has been in the car. Did he use the original 350 and stoke it, or drop a new/rebuilt block in? Has he run it at the track? What kind of mileage has he been getting with it? Hopefully, these Q's can help you estimate the reliability of the car.

I'd ask to see some reciepts or something...otherwise check nubers and assume it's a 350

I once saw a kid get shamed into buying a Camaro with Z-28 decales. he ended up replacing the engine, because he really wanted a 5.7TPI instead of a 305TBI.....

unless you're really good with picking cars, I would ask him to bring it to a mechanic of your choice and have it looked over. $75-$100 seems like a lot to spend on a car that's not yours, but better than a $3500 mistake!

This is not always true if its internally balanced or has a fluid damper, but check the harmonic balancer, looks way different then a 350's big notch in it etc, see if the flex plate is weighted. a 383 stroker even with a moderate cr, stock type heads and a moderate cam should be in the 400 hp range, they also tend to be torque monsters, however just testing it out won't tell you for sure because a healthy 350 can feel the same. You will be able to tell if its a 305. Check the numbers make sure its a 4 bolt main etc etc. I don't think it is unreasonable to assume its a 383 but do the research as if you were just going to by the motor by itself. Ask the guy what had to be done to the motor and oil pan to stroke the motor. Get into specifics about the crank, pistons cam etc. The car better have sfc's too.
