History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
there should be wheel color RPO. at least there was in the earlier third gen, for trans am's and firebirds; that I know for sure. yours might be different, depending on what color the gold was for your year, or it might not be there at all. but if it's there, it should be 2 numbers followed by a P, like 55P, 87P, 13P, 40P, etc.
the 2 cars below (middle & right) both have 55P (gold wheel RPO)
N96 code on one of my 87 Iroc-Z['s is for the 16X8 aluminum wheels, code 15P is for wheel color silver metallic. I have another iroc with factory Gold 16 inch wheels and can check the option code tomarrow if needed. Check out the picture of my 86 Iroc-Z with factory Gold wheels.

In the RPO codes for the car, I found the RPO code 88P. However, the decoder on thirdgen.org didn't have it in its database. How do you know that 88P is the RPO code for gold wheen color?
I just ran all of the option codes from my 86 Iroc-Z with gold wheels. The car has code 88P and the decoder dosen't have this code. All my other trim color codes are in the data base. 88A is the code for the accent stripe in gold so 88P may just be the code for the gold wheel accent, 15P is the silver wheel accent. So 88= Gold accent and P= Wheel?

I've looked at many IROC's & Z28's over the years and have taken alot of notes. 88P seemed to be used for the 16in. gold wheels and 92P used for 15in. gold wheels on the Z28's.
The gold package was available on IROC's from 85-90, not 85-87. The style of the wheel pictured was available in gold from 85-87, and was available on the newly restyled rim from 88-90.

Bikertrashdude is the guy I met at one of the MD get togethers this past summer. He had the 15 inch gold rims on his car. I'll check the past threads and see if his wheels are in a pic.

yea i got 15" gold rims on the IROC. 88 was the only year that the IROCs had 15" (and i got stuck with gold ones)
car is black with gold "IROC" badges all around, the pinstripes around the car are gold too, took those off when i bought the car, it was too 80's for me.
the rims are your standard 15"x7" Z-28 rims but all gold (well yellow) I hate them. They are coming off this week.
I'll try and take a pic this weekend of the car, before i put the new (to me) rims on.
I recently bought a 1986 IROC that has on the RPO sticker 88A and 88P.
From reading this thread I'm gathering that these mean:
88A : STRIPE COLOR, ACCENT, TWO TONE, GOLD/BLACK (91)
88P : NOT FOUND - Many say it means 16" Wheel Color -- Gold Metallic
My wheels look silver to me which I found odd, and why I ended up finding this thread searching for an answer.
Have my rims faded or did someone change them? Or does 88P not really mean gold wheels?
88P is for the gold wheels. 88A is for the gold graphics. The wheels are supposed to match the graphics color (silver or gold). 86P would be silver wheels and 86A would be the silver graphics.

After looking online at other black and gold IROCs the PO must have changed the wheels to the sliver ones. But to be honest I'm kind of thinking the gold has a lot of gold on it, maybe I'll just live with the ones I have. Debating on adding some gold to them to make them "match" but that might end up looking crappy too.
The black and gold IROC-Zs are classic, but the wheels need to match the emblems and graphics. If you think the exterior gold is too much, you'll need to replace the graphics and emblems with silver for the car to look correct. Or, you could do what a lot of people have done and remove the graphics and just replace the emblems to silver ones as the factory ones are probably in rough shape these days anyway.
The issue with the exterior being accented in silver is that it won't look right when you have the tan interior. The easiest option will be to get these wheels painted correctly to match the tan, or buy new/aftermarket wheels.

I don't disagree that the wheels I have in reality don't match the rest of the car...but I think you might be a little more militant about "having to have gold wheels" than I am.
If I did aftermarket wheels that were all brushed aluminum or chrome I don't think anyone would think twice about it. I'm guessing 99% of the general public won't notice that they don't match. Don't match in our eyes because we know what they should be. But again I don't disagree they are wrong, that gut feeling was why I was searching on here to for sure what the RPOs on my car meant.
Honestly the bluish cheap Walmart tint on the side windows is a lot bigger eyesore in my mind! Getting that all replaced and the hatch tinted soon enough. But in the big picture my plan is to drive the car for the summer and decide if its a keeper or not and then I'll worry about making some changes. I had a Gen 2 T/A Y82 when I was younger so I do like the black and gold combo and the more I look at the pics of your car vs mine the more I'm warming up to getting some gold ones/refinishing these/etc.
I may be biased in that I owned my red/gold 89 for 20 years, but I think it'd look a little off with some gold and some silver. Silver can go with chrome, black, other colors etc. etc. -for example the red decals still got silver wheels. The gold wheels though, kinda needs to go with gold, at least in my opinion. ....now to Scott's point about the interior, I'd have no issues with the exterior being silver, but having the tan interior. Many many cars offer that. BUT to each their own of course.
I'd also like to point out that Scott and I have both participated in this entire thread, going back over 20 years. That's kinda cool. Love this group!
I have to concede the silver wheels on my car just don't look right. Maybe I was trying to lie to myself to save some money???
Working on getting it running right and fixing a lot of little things right now. Got the car retinted this week, and this coming week its going in for new exhaust from the exhaust manifolds back. I went with Magnaflow to replace the clapped out Flowmaster muffler at the end of a lot of rusty old parts... anyway point relevant to this thread is gold rims are a must. Just want to get a few other things done first but I'm laying in wait for some factory ones to surface.
I think it depends on budget and just how nice you're planning on getting the car. With a little patience, you could probably sell the silver and find some gold ones for no money loss. ....refinishing will cost ya, but they'll be more less perfect. ...depending on condition, you can always refinish yourself too. I'd done a few sets over the years. The paint is easy if you have some patience, it's the machined faces that can be tough. You can always polish them (which looks awesome btw) but if you want the OEM machined look and they have some damage, you'll probably want to have a pro refinish.
Pretty sure Hawk's sells factory refinished too, if you haven't looked yet.
