I just bought an 88 Trams Am and am wondering what the B2L stands for on the engine code? Thanks for the help!

Hi, to answer your question as best as i can "B2L " is the engine package of which the L98 is part of, hope this helps- GTA........

GTA is correct, it's the RPO code for the 5.7TPI engine package
Mar 17, 2003 | 07:48 AM

The above answers are correct.
B2L=RPO code for the 5.7 enginge package on the order form.
L98= Engine type ID for the 5.7 by GM
However, both are for the same engine.

Thanks for the help! I just bought the car from a friend for $130.00 Yes the decimal is in the right place! I couldn't believe it when he called me he just got tired of fixing it and now it blew a head gasket so I got it. It runs and drives good despite the head gasket it just needs cleaning a hood and someone like me to play with it! anyways, thanks again!

actually the L98 was only available in camaros in 87. In 88 the B2L came out. They are indeed different engines.

The L98 had 9.0:1 compression putting out 225 horses and 330 pound feet of torque.

The B2L bumped up the compression to 9.3:1 maxing horsepower and torque out at 245 and 345 respectively.

Sorry for the technicality but they are different.

B2L & L98 are both RPO codes for the 5.7 engine. Check the RPO decoder on this site.

dont get me wrong...i am in agreement that they both have a 4 in bore and 3.48 in stroke displacing 350 cubic inches.

Black beauty, can you explain then how the L98 is the STANDARD on a GTA, and GTA's were introduced in 1987? I know there are 87 TransAms/GTA and Formula's with the 350 TPI engine.

I think you need to read this page. And there are other sites out there to support the numbers listed. http://www.transamgta.com/EngineSpecs.html

read my post. i said L98s were offered in 1987.

NO! NO! NO! They are the same thing, basically it is like the Corvette engine but with iron heads and iron exhaust manifolds instead of the aluminum items found on the Corvette's L98.Both codes are found on all 5.7l 3rdgen fbods.
L98 is the GM universal code for a 350 with tuned port fuel injection. Period. All 350 thirdgens have L98. B2L is the GM code for the L98 in a thirdgen. When you buy a 350 thirdgen you automatically get the B2L option package that includes an oil cooler (KC4), posi (G80), and generally rear disk brakes and 3:23 or 3:27 gears depending on the year. Also when an L98 went into a camaro or firebird they used different accessories, and accessory brackets than a vette.B2L is an option and equipment package that contains those changes needed for installation into a thirdgen.
To say that a 350 in all thirdgens isn't really an L98 is just mis-informed bs.If B2L was an engine code instead of L98, then the code L98 wouldn't show on our rpo stickers.

i kept my statements very concise because i knew i was going to get in trouble, perhaps you are correct that they are just RPO codes and the engine remains the same. But that doesnt change the mechanical differences between a 1987 L98 RPO coded thirdgen and a 1988-1992 B2L RPO coded thirdgen. I do not take any of my statements back rather i stand behind them.

Whether they have different internals remains to be seen.I won't comment on that because I'm not too sure about that but otherwise my comments stand. Peace!:lala:

Ill leave with this...

I beleive that the L98 package featuring the L98 engine was available in 1987. In 1988 the RPO package may indeed be B2L featuring a L98 engine (featuring 9.3:1 as opposed to 87's 9.0:1 compression and increased in horsepower and torque to 230 and 330 as opposed to 87 and only 87's rating of 225 and 330 apparently from the compression increase.

Rick

PS- sorry for the confusing statements before.

edit:
I hope i dont get kicked out for treason. I love the site but...
That tech data sheet is *cough*cough*bs.

if you must know the HP and TQ ratings of thirdgens they follow:
87- 225/330
88- 230/330
89- 240/330
90- 230/330
91- 245/345
92- 245/345
according to my sources...

Read 91Z's post once more, because he is right. L98 and B2L both mean the 350 TPI engine. All L98's in our cars have 9.3:1 compression. B2L is the option package and L98 is the engine included in it. Every single 350 TPI from 87-92 has the RPO codes L98 and B2L in them because you can't have it without either. There were improvements on the engine throughout the years, it just wasn't 225HP/330TQ 1 year and 245HP/345TQ the next. Check out the Tech Data on the main page also.

BlackBeauty
Huh? The B2l(all 3rdgens rpo code w/350) packaged L98 didn't have 245hp/345tq until '91.
Jun 26, 2003 | 11:29 PM
  #17
Black beauty, go read up on the link in my previous post. That info is also supported by several other sites, including the pontiac literature that I have read.

The numbers went up in 90-92 cars using the speed density system, but the firebirds air intake was to restrictive to get the 245/345 numbers you've mentioned.

B2L is the 350 TPI engine in a thirdgen. No matter if it was a 87 or a 92. They made small changes each model year that bumped the power numbers up every year. But they were small changes, and the changes didn't affect the B2L RPO, or the L98 codes.

You can have an L98 in a vette, and you can have it in a third gen too. But only a thirdgen gets the B2L code.

I was talking about the firebirds intake. Most people just say take 10hp/10tq off the camaro's numbers and you'll get what it is for the firebird of that year. This is in respect to the TPI cars.

hummmm If l98 didnt come out until 88 then why Does my 87 Iroc have B2L & L98 in the RPO codes???????????

relying on my sources i stand my statements above...now edited.

my sources tell me the tech sheet is wrong but my sources may very well be just as wrong. just about anything get published these days.

Your sources ARE wrong, completly at that. I really DON'T think GM codes and RPO sheets are wrong, because they never are, unless they mess up and put the wrong part in.

The L98 is GM 's engine code for the 5.7 and also the RPO code on both 3rd gen cars. The horsepower varied with model years & carlines for 3rd gen, So Both did have B2L RPO which is a add on performance package for reguired options.

L98 is A PART of the B2L code. Just like D80 (spoilers) is with the Z28 code.

that site bites ***.

they are not reputable.

i picked a random year to find mistakes. 1969. a good year.
i was going to say they forgot about 4 engines but i realized they might not have RPO codes because they were standard but they made no mention of them either. (140 hp I6, 200hp 307, 210hp 327, 290hp 302)

They also misquoted hp for 2 optional engines they listed.
the LM1 350 had 255hp not 225.
Jun 27, 2003 | 04:33 PM
  #30
they also made no mention of the L72 or the ZL1 427s.
but then again they were COPO cars...wonder if that site knew those lil cars.

i just want the truth.

why do u trust camarosource for RPO codes but not their engine specs? that makes no sense.
i provided their engine specs...stating 9.0:1 compression.
all you have to say is...look at thirdgen.org's spec sheet?? ive seen it. its lame. you say camaro source knows what they are talking about....then they do. they say 1987 L98s had 9.0:1 compression. Then they did.

Peace.

No, TGO knows what it's talking about and has always been the best place for information for these cars. That stuff is incorrect. 87 L98's had 9.3:1 compression just as ALL L98's did. In 88 the L98 only went up 5HP, in 89 it got more power if it was ordered WITH dual converters, and so on.

You want to see an 87 IROC with both codes?? No problem, this is a 10,000 mile all-original 87 IROC-Z 350 TPI.

Window sticker: http://www.users.qwest.net/~smoyer/i...dowsticker.jpg Notice the B2L code.

Build Sheet: http://www.users.qwest.net/~smoyer/i...buildsheet.jpg Notice the L98 code.

On his RPO sheet, it has both codes together, just as ALL 350 TPI F-Bodies do.

87 IROC 350's are the only cars that have L98, B2L, B4Z, and Z28 all together.
Jun 27, 2003 | 05:23 PM

Huh?who thinks that it's a conspiracy theory?You!
TGO is about the best there is(best period) for 3rdgens for technical info/specs so trying to get some respectable info for somebody to learn on is hard to come by elsewhere on the net.If you want good info, since you don't want to believe me or others,go to a library or bookstore and look for yourself.I'm not talking about this to a brick wall anymore so Peace.

p.s.Next I bet that you're going to say that IrocZtwentygr8 photoshopped the pics in his links.

  #38
i too am done arguing. that looks fabbed IMO... which makes it worse. but i will leave it alone. 91...my sources come from the library and bookstores. i dont make this **** up. i am serious in saying that printed material says contrary to what the internet is saying. Im just offering up information to the world that is listening or not listening. it still seems to me that in 87 the RPO for a 5.7l is L98 (and it had 9:1 compression), the performance axle ratio was extra at (21$), the power 4 wheel disc brakes ($179) extra.

in 1988 the RPO B2L referred to a package containing a 9.3:1 L98 called the B2L, and a performance axle ratio and disc brakes.

the 89-92 used the RPO B2L to refer to a 9.3:1 compression version of the L98. those axle/brakes were available extra once again extra as seperate RPOs (G92 etc)

thats all. just my lowly opinion and the opinion of some people who have been writing these books for 50 years...doubt they have any good sources.

edit...there is also no MX0 auto RPO in 1988...it was part of the package B2L in 1988.

Peace.

ROTFL, :sillylol: I can't believe it!! I'm sure SM and every other 87 L98 owner PSed their RPO codes LOL. Why would they?! And no that stuff like the axle and 4WD brakes did NOT cost extra because in 87 with the 350 it was all STANDARD, your info is wrong. Drew, Willie, SM, and any other 87 IROC 350 owner or person that has further proof, are you out there?! I happen to be looking for the very car we are talking about and have seen the RPO stickers myself when looking at a car I was interested in. You are wrong and so is your sources. That is that. L98's with 9.0:1 compression LOL. This is so frustrating. The ONLY Third Gens that came with 9.0:1 compression were the 2.5 Liter 4 cylinders!!

B2L = L98 option and accessories in an F-Body.
L98 = The engine in that the option comes with, VIN number 8.

SAME engine, SAME compression.

Idiots **** me off.

Arguing about the variations from year to year to this extent is retarded. All 350 TPI thirdgens carry both RPO's, L98 and B2L. Who cares about the exact compression ratio or HP specs? All of these cars have been used and cared for differently. Its very likely that no two cars equipped identically will have exactly the same HP now that the newest thirdgen is 12 years old.

Why is it that no one asks about restoring their cars on this board? I see the occassional "where can I get this decal" or similar posts, but the constant bickering just keeps coming up. The newbies and the old timers all have different opinions, and no opinions ever get changed. Worse yet the same crap pops up over and over again.
