Ok, my friend is purchasing an 86 Iroc Camaro. Which was made in Norwood, production sequence 186751. Now my 86 Iroc was built in Van Nuys production sequence 162122. My question is. When and why did they go from Van Nuys to Norwood or what ever. Did they switch mid year. Or did they use both at the same time to produce them. What were the advantages of one place over the other. and last but not least, was mine built before his, since mine is the lower number? or where certain number just alloted to different plants? Any help would be appreacted.

Nowood and Van Nuys both made 3rd Gen cars before 1987.
They used the same production seguence numbers and yours may have been built first (not positive). The advantage Norwood had was better Paint and Quality Control over Van Nuys. In regards to assembly line speeds Van Nuys made more cars per hour. Production stopped at Norwood in mid 1987 when the old plants was closed by GM. It is regarded that better cars were made a Norwood, Ohio.

well thats cool to know, yeah I sort of guessed with the paint thing. the clear is all off of mine basically, and the rest of the paint on mine was terrible, so that explains it. Cool thanks.

Yeah, the Van Nuys paint process was different (I forget the details. Something to do with CA EPA regulations I think). I never heard any other differences between the plants, though. I've got a Van Nuys baby...the clear was gone off my trunk lid at 10 years and 120K miles, but other than that it had held up ok on the rest of the car. But you can see the new paint here...

Norwood used solvent based paint. Van Nuys used water based paint. oil > water
also the epa required van nuys to use the same method as the norwood plant for the paint but it didnt work as well with the water based paint.

I havent seen any iroc made in Van Nuys that isnt repainted.
