Firebird Headlight Motor

Auto parts stores can sell you a rebuilt motor. I think they may still be available at the dealer too, but bring a sturdy chair to sit on so you dont fall over.
I'd go to the junkyard, grab a few, and fix one or two or so.
Common failure #1 on those IMO is the brushes. You can take off the side door that has 3 screws and check out the condition of those.
Common failure #2 is the gear getting stripped.
I've heard of other problems, but of all the motors in that vintage I have had, its rare for anything else to go wrong. The plastic 'bearings' and other plastic stuff seem to hold up ok.

Looks like junkyard it is
Out here in the middle of no where wyoming, the auto parts stores don't sell the rebuilt motors for the lights. I was also told by the dealers out here that the motor is no longer made.
So, I'll go hit up the junkyards for some parts this weekend and possibly even send my old motors off to Third Gen Resource to be rebuilt
Thanks for the info.

Get the rebuild kit from http://www.topdownsolutions.com The rebuild is easy. It's not hard to do. I did it myself in about 2 hours. Both pulling the motors and headlight assembly out, and doing the rebuild. It's easy.
The 85 Fiero I had for 3 months had the 82-86 Firebird style motors. Neither worked when I got the car. One turned out to be a relay, the other had a loose connection inside the housing. It took about half an hour to fix both lights. People just don't take the time to try to repair their existing hardware, before they buy a junk part from a scrapyard. Pull the motor apart and see why it's not working. Worst case scenario you can't fix it and you need to go get another one.

Wouldn't it be possible to outfit the car with the newer style motors? I would think you might have to take the whole headlight assembly out of the newer car to do it. Then it would be a simple matter of the rebuild kit fixing the motors.
I know there is a difference in wiring, but surely this can be overcome.
