I visited this website today : http://www.iroczone.com/techartspottersguide.html
When i look at 1988 iroc its says that all cars that came with the 5,7 and 5,0TPI engine had a 145 MPH speedo. Is that really true since i have a 115MPH on my iroc with the original tpi engine.
Second question: Was the LO3 engine really avaliable on irocs in 1989???

Allen, the admin at that site, put together the guide. It is wrong. For 1988, the 305 TPI with 5-speed (& better cam) and 350 TPI got the 145-mph speedo and 5,500 redline tach. The 305 TPI with auto (peanut cam) got the 115-mph speedo and 5,000 redline tach. You might want to go back there and correct him. Tell him I said so as I do not visit that website (long story).
General rule for TPI Camaros: The 145-mph speedo was used in conjunction with the 5,500 rpm tach, the only exception being 1986 & 1987. This implies this setup was used with the "good" cam and/or G92 (depending on year). The 5,000 tach was used with the 85 mph speedo (thru 1987) or 115 mph speedo from 1988 on).
Second question: Was the LO3 engine really avaliable on irocs in 1989???
Yes. The base IROC-Z engine for 1985 - 1987 was the 305 carb (LG4) and 305 TBI (L03) from 1988 - 1989.

Part of the problem is the Camaro White Book is wrong on this also. They say all tpi's got the 145 mph speedo in 1988. I think that 86 and 87 were the only year's that had a 145 mph speedo and a peanut cam 305. I have one in mine.

I have discovered over the years that no one source is 100 percent correct, so it's hard to determine what is factual and what is not.

This raises an interesting point. The 145-mph speedo was introduced in late 1986 on 305 TPI equipped Z28's (with and without IROC-Z). All 305 TPI's were peanut equipped with the 5,000 rpm redline tach this year. In 1987, this "tradition" continued -- all 305 TPI's (and the new 350) got the 145-mph speedo, regardless of cam. I also own a 1987 305 TPI / auto (w/peanut) with a 145. I also have G92, which seems to be inconsequential.

I knew someone would eventually ask. When "that" site was relatively new, I was asked to moderate their History board. I declined, siting my allegency was with this board and this board only. That's when things turned nasty. Allen, their admin, started posting questions here to which I answered most of them. I did not know his connection to "that" site at that time. He used the information I supplied him to write up his spotters guide. I know all this information can be considered public, but the way he approached it was unethical. If he would have stated in his posts of his intentions, then it would give respondents an opportunity NOT to answer with a legitimate reason. After I found out about this, I e-mailed him on several occasions and never received a response. I took this personal and have not been "there" since. That was over one year ago.

Thanks for the reply. I think I goofed up, 86 and 87 305 peanut cam motors probably got the 145 speedo. see edit.

Camaros not withstanding, is the tach and trans engine relation common with Birds as well? I had no indication other then my tach and exhaust when initially determining my engine, at least I based my findings early on on that.

I have a 1987 Trans-AM with a TPI 305 and a 700R4 transmission. I also have the 145MPH speedometer.
I think 305's could have had just about any of the spedos and 350's always got the 145. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
