Engines in 82 were GM Blue and starting in 83, they were black.

So..

82: Blue
83-92: Black

'77 was the last year for red/orange. The re-styled '78 Camaros got the new blue paint.

Cool.
So my engine must be pre '77.

I actually have reason to beleive the engine might be something other than a 305.

Is it likely to be a 350 or a 305? Considering the color and everything. I know I should be checking the casting numbers, but I havent got a chance to go way back there and find them.

Yeah, don't judge an engine by it's color. Bad idea. My '86 305 was just rebuilt and painted blue.

Yeah exactly. Some guys think it's nostalgic or something to paint their late model 305's orange.

if its pre-77 its probably a 350.

Look at the number at the back of the block, drivers side, were the bellhousing bolts on. If the last three digits of that number are 010, then its a 350.
