should i buy it?
should i buy it?
i ahve a 90 rs 305 tbi right now...but the floor needs some attention that i don't ahve time for and i want to sell it and get an iroc or z-28
im looking at a 87 iroc 305 tpi with 3.45 posi disc rear and a M5... little surface rust needs paint ....possibly seals....
he said it blows some smoke on strart up, is that a big deal? which color means oil?
how many changes were made between 87 and 90 as far as engine and such? should i be worring about "down grading"??
hes asking 2500....

The 87 IROC is the better, more performance built car. IROC vs. RS.
The only thing that you *might* consider better is the air bag in the 90 RS for protection, but I don't like the revised interior.
Buying the 87 would actually be upgrading over the 90!!

Buying the 87 would actually be upgrading over the 90!! thats what i was thinkign for the most part as far as suspension , what else is better? i think it has to ahve a oil cooler to have the 3.45 posi rear disck combo? right?
my biggest consern was any changes to the tranny or engine in the three years.... the 9 bolt shoudl be ebtter too right? 7.75 vd 7.25 ring gear? is the housing any stronger? do they use the c-clip design?
i'm lookign for any negative reasons not to get it/why its not better , i think i hve enough on teh pro side
does the 87 iroc have the close ratio steering box?

Yes, the IROC has everything and TPI. And the 9-Bolt is better also.

Things you give up by going to the 87 from the 90:
1. Air bag
2. Newer style dash, and if your RS is a 1SC car you have much nicer seats.
3. Serpentene belt system.
But the things you are going to gain far outweigh what you are giving up.

is that seat rpo for the "custom seats" grey with the black lines and lumber/seat section? i like my seats but the drivers side it ripped ot hell anyway so the front are covered... what is better about serpentine? i coudl change it if i really wanted to right? also , when he got it, it was running really bad so he said he replaced the harness with a 86 harness and computer so it has the older hei, big difference? maybe he still has the old that i could fix/check out....or i could buy one i guess... do computers ever go bad? i ahve a 87 iroc comp sitting at home, but not sure if it had the same engine, is the engine all taht matters for which comp you use? rearend /tranny too? i think i may liek the older style dashanyway.... oh and it has a black interior the seats are black sort of angled material with it looks like a light or white outlines... is that rare? i ahven't seen it often, it look sin good conditon, i think i may still change to 4th gen seats in the far future, if i get it....

If the body is strait and rust free I'd go for it. If it blows blue smoke on start up your burning a little oil, no biggie. Fairly common for SBC's. As long as it doesnt do it when you hit the gas.
Anyways, like everyone said, just because its older, doesnt mean your downgrading.

Blue smoke is usually oil, But if its only on startup then it may be just leaky valves...

I think its a few seconds before most of the oil burns off. Its kind of average.
I see plenty of cars that do it, and still run fairly well. If you are that concerned its not that much work to pull the heads and have them done up with new seals. Was gonna cost me $160 for both heads to have a 3 angle valve job, new seals, etc.....didn't seen like too bad a price.

Usually leaky valves will give you a second or two of blue smoke. Its usually caused from the valve seals leaking, and letting oil seep down into the chamber in the head, when you start the car than PUFF!!.
Do a valve job on the car, almost any machine shop should be able to do it for you. You just need to remove the heads.
