rear window louvers???

well i dont have my car yet (if you go down a few threads you will see my other post). But i am looking at stuff i want to put on the car when i get it. one of the first appearance options i want to put on is the rear window louvers. I only saw a handful of irocs with them, and tried to find some on iroc-z.com, and even the "picture" section on goolge.com. i still havent found one for sale except this one LOUVERS , but the guy selling it doesnt know if it would fit an iroc. he does give measurments, but i dont have a roc yet, so i dont know. that is the only one on eBay, and anywhere else i ssaw for sale so far even when i do an archive search just to get an idea of how much they cost.

i have a few questions about them:

1. do i have to drill holes in the body to get these to fit?
2. does anyone have pictures of iroc's with window louvers?
3. does anywhere on the internet make louvers for the window?
4. were there any complaints with these from people with them on?
5. how much are the?
lastly 6. do they look as good in reallife as they do in pictures?

thanks for your time, albert III

1. You should not have to drill any holes. The factory set has clips that slide over the edge of the window frame that the louvers attach to. Aftermarket sets could be the same or have you remove the 4 glass mounting screws to attach a metal strip that the louvers attach to. You ONLY want a factory set. The aftermarket sets rattle and look ridiculous.

2. I will attach a photo of my car at the bottom.

3. I have a partial set that is new from the factory. If you could get another set for any 82-92 model from the dealer, I could get you set up on how to create a full set without the 3rd brake light assembly. Most sets that are still available at the dealer are for the 91 and 92 model year. I can let my partial set go cheap.

4. People complain about them rattling. That's because they have the aftermarket garbage. I have had 2 different factory sets on my IROC-Z and neither set has rattled. My dad now has one of the sets on his 82 Z28.

5. That depends. The dealer will show a list price of over $230, but since they have been discontinued for many years, most dealers will let them go for less than $100 if they have them in inventory. If you call a dealer and they don't have a set, ask them to do a dealer locate for you and they will tell you who has what and how many.

6. I think so. The aftermarket louvers make the car look like an armadillo, but the factory set is sleek and looks good. I will get a photo of the car from behind and post it later today. All photos I have are from the side.

You wouldn't happen to have the part # for that would you? I'd love to call the dealers around here and see if they have some; it sure would be easier than painting mine!

Also, mine are the 3 piece style... and since you say that you have factory ones and they are one piece... mine is aftermarket?

I don't have the part number. Mine are also 3 piece, but they look like 1 piece. If you look at the pic with the hatch open, you can see the slats are flat metal and then the curved pieces are made of ABS. They fit together like a puzzle and lock in place.

BTW, I need to get mine painted also. the 2 slats that I removed from my spare set to replace the 3rd brake light assembly has a very thin coat of paint on it. They actually look like their starting to rust thru the paint. You can see it if you look carefully at the open hatch photo.

Something looks "off" about those louvers on ebay. They either look backwards or something....they just don't look right. I do have a set of factory louvers that I could stand to part with, although they aren't in quite as good condition as the ebay set which appears to have been stored in a box, rather than been on a car for the past 15 years. Mine are the same as scottmoyer's, but not as shiney

Those on Ebay are not for a thirdgen car. There isn't enough contour to the sides. That set is designed for a flat rear window like the picture on the box. I wouldn't buy them, since the seller doesn't know what they are for. It's easy to say things are for a Camaro or Firebird since those words sell items. They won't work.

BTW, the picture was taken from the top looking down. The bottom is higher because they were designed for a car with a rear window wiper. These look exactly like a set we had on a 78 Toyota Celica with the rear wiper.

Nice pics scott.

Here is a rear quarter shot.

If I may add to the info above, the factory shades also have 2 prop rods that swing down to hold and lock into the bottom anchors to hold itself up while you clean the window. I usualy put down some Rain-X as this keeps the window cleaner between washes.

Here's that rear view. Notice how the factory set doesn't sit higher than the roof of the car or wider than the car. The aftermarket sets sit very high and have an unnatural shape to them.

SLOW!!. It's a fiberglass/composite frame. It's lightweight and runs about 20mph. It's for my 6yo son. He got it from grampa when he turned 5. It's a 5hp Briggs engine that really needs a tuneup. It's fun and my son like it. I need to get him an upgrade soon.

IIRC all cars produced on/after 86 must have a third brake light or you get a ticket.

Yes, the car will still have the 3rd brake light but the louvers don't have to. As I mentioned, most louver sets available today from the factory will be for the 91/92 model year which had the 3rd brake light mounted in the glass. The louvers were designed around this. He's looking at an 89, which had the brake light in the rear spoiler. It would look ridiculous having the light in the spoiler and having the louvers installed to accomodate a window brake light assembly.

Please reread the posts.
