87 GTA question

My 87 GTA has a nine bolt rearend, did 87 GTA's get those or did someone put that in themselves? It doesn't look like a transplant but I don't know when the nine bolts were used, thats why I am asking. Thanks in advance!

As specified elsewhere on this site, the 9 bolt was optional on the 1986-1989 F-body cars...

So it probably is original...

The 9 bolt actually first appeared in 1985.

Yep, most likely original. If your car is an automatic then your ratio should be 3.27:1.

Has there ever been anyone on Thirdgen with an original 85 9 bolt? I knew it was optional, but didn't think it was really out there...

Or is it more common than I think? I thought the 86 9 bolts were pretty rare and that it wasn't common until 87...

When I had my 84 HO, a buddy of mine had an 85 HO IROC that had one. Both cars were 5spd.

My cousin has a 85 T/a with the B/W 9bolt. His car was a L69 car. The gears are 3:73's.
Laters,
Conrad

Oh, his car is a 5speed also.

Firebirds were using the 9-bolt rears before the Camaro.

You are sure that it had a 3.73 stock? And not like a 3.70 or something...I thought factory 3.73 was only a 10 bolt deal then. I know that 3.73 BW gears exist now...

I owned one many moons ago, had the highway gear (2.77?). When I bought the car I had to go and service the thing (you know, oil, coolant, trans fluid, rear diff) and found out the hard way that not too many people had parts for them. Had to order the diff gasket from the dealer.
