1982 = 3 speed auto TH-200C

1983 - 1992 = TH-700R4

'89 TTA = TH-2004R

The TH700R4 is a 4 speed automatic overdrive transmission. There isn't a base 3 speed version of it. The overdrive feature is integral and can't be separated at all. Some design elements in the 700R4 are supposedly similar to the TH350, but they are different transmissions.

The TH200-4R on the other hand is pretty much a TH200 with an overdrive unit added on.

I thought the 700R was closer in design to the 400 trans than the 350 trans, could be wrong tho... Although this conversation might be better had in the transmission area...

The 700R4 is a 4spd overdrive with a lockout torque converter. In the 80's and early 90's GM did not produce a 4spd version of the 400 Turbo until the 4L80E was produced.

The 200R4 was the tranny that was used in the Grand Nationals and Turbo T/A.

There were several versions of the 700R4 (V8, V6 and several versions of the V6 tranny)

The best tranny without the OD would be the 400 Turbo. This was the tranny that GM put behind the large HP engines (and Chevy Big blocks) such as the Buick 455, Pontiac Ram Air 400's and 455's, Caddilac 501's and so on.

There are both short tailshaft and long tailshaft versions of this tranny.

The 350 Turbo is a solid tranny and is actually easier to find than the 400 Turbo and the 350 has a lower 1st gear than the 400. But for rock solid tranny without any modification, the 400 is the better way to go for dependability.
