8th digit for engine ident...

I just made a search and the answers were pretty vague... My engine number is H.. so I am listed for a LG4 (what an engine) yet, on the data list it says that they came with 3.23 gears and I have a RPO code that list my gears as 3.43... what'S the deal? and there are some posts about LG4 with HO heads being vin code H... someone can clarify all that for me please?

H is the LG4, no questions there. A gear other than a 3.23 is pretty likely IMO, there were all sorts of gear options through the engine combinations and years. Didnt know any came with a 3.42, but I'm no expert on what gear was available with what engine anyway, I just know there were options to get different ones.

could the LG4 come with 3 inches exhaust? was there an RPO code for that? on my rpo sheet there are some codes that couldn't be decoded when I ran it a while back... I'm asking that because my exhaust seems bigger than 2 1/4 (which I am listed for in the Walker catalog for a 85 code H engine) ?

All the heads on the LB9, LG4 & L69 were the same for each particular year from 82-87. For example my 87 Formula came with an LG4, it has the same head casting # as the LB9.

Same thing in 1986, All the 305 heads on V8 1986 F-bodies were the same. (or at least the part numbers are the same in the parts & illustration catalogs.

This changed in 1988, where each V8 engine got a specific head.
