How come Chevrolet never made a factory 3rd gen ss camaro. I know the name was not retired because they made ss monte carlos in the 80's. was a ss third gen camaro ever a thought?

Chevrolet wasn't into whoring their classic nameplates back in the 80's like today. Now that the bean counter desk jockeys are in control nothing is sacred. Anything for a buck.

There were 1970-1972 Super Sports, and as in the 1st Gen, it was available with either the 350 or the 396 (actually 402) engines, and could be combined with the Rally Sport package as before.....
In 1973, the SS was replaced with the Type LT.
Man, did the mid-70's SUCK.

There was a 2ndgen Camaro SS... from 1970-72. You could get one with a 350, 396, or a 454 in 1970.
** Yes, the LS6 (454 - 450hp) was an option, but only one was actually built. Its since been restored. **
The '72 SS is actually probably the most sought after of the 3 years, because it was a short production run (plant strike I think) and it was the last year for both the SS and for big block power.

My opinion on why there was no thirdgen SS? well i think like this thirdgens where not really muscle cars..... what i mean by this is it was a uni-body built to take corners. My Monte on the other hand is a full frame 3500 pound beast that can go really fast in a really strait line while your camaros can take a corner as well as they make a 1/4 mile passes. so i think gm thought it didnt fit the true SS scheme... but long behold in the mid 90's they would do anything for a buck and the SS name came back in a slew of cars that lacked muscle car looks. please dont flame me i loved my thirdgen but its really not ment to be an SS car thats why they where dubed "Rally Sport" And "International Race Of Champions" names id expect to see on a car that loves the road corse. *** im gona get ****in flamed for this.. But ask any full frame owner in stock form we are slugs around a road corse but really man thirdgens didnt need an "ss hood" or some facncy package that makes colectors *** in there pants and buy every last car. so be thankful look at monte's 5000 minium for a SS in good shape. got mine as a deal cuase its interior is shot and the paint sucks....

Teal i totally disagree with you. Yes the 4th gens didnt look like muscle cars (more of a sport car) but they still are, the name "Camaro and Firebird" have history. THere both Muscle cars from any generation (1st 2nd 3rd 4th) Look at the early 80s and mid 70s f bodys. They were rated horrible performance #s due to Emissions and the Oil Crisis. Imo there still Muscle Cars. Same with 3rd gens. 3rd gens are Still F bodys and have a name. The Corvette was always GMs "SPORT CAR" so it compete agianst Porsches, Ferraris, Lambos all of the Euros top stuff. Imho i dont see "sport" in 3rd gens. I see more Muscle Car in it (jmo tho) Just my 2 cents

I think we should all just be thankful or cars didn't end up like the Nova or Malibu. Remember they turned into four door econo boxes in the 80's and 90's. At least we still have a platform to build our own version of an SS.
I AM FREAKIN HAPPY AS HELL THEY DIDN'T AXE OUR CARS STATUS. Think about that one everyone!
