Need some background please

HI guys, this is my first post. I have been browsing the site and it is the most helpful resource I have found. My question is about the rarity of my car. I recently bought a 1990 Iroc-z convertible. It has the TPI 305 in it with the 700 R4. I mentioned that I had picked it up to someone I know and he told me he thought it was a somewhat rare car. I know that 90 was limited production, and the last year of the Iroc. But I dont know much else about the history of it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Nick

The 90 Camaros are limited in production. There were only 1294 IROC-Z convertibles made in 90. Total production of Camaros was a little below 35,000. All 90 Camaros were produced in 89 with production stopping in December of 1989. The 1991 cars had an early release with just over 100k Camaros made.

The 90 IROC is a keeper based on limited production, last year of the IROC-Z, first year of the air bag and the end of an era. There will probably never be another IROC-Z so the 6 years of it's production will make it a collectible in any Camaro enthusiasts eyes.

Thanks a lot. Do you happen to know how many of the convertibles were 700 R4? I believe I heard that all of the '90 Iroc convertibles came with the 700 R4 and that it only came with the 305. Is that right? If so, will converting it to a T5 hurt the value of the car?

That is actually not true. My 90 IROC-Z convertible has the T5 manual. I have heard there were roughly 200 of these, but I don't know that for sure. Maybe Scott or Willie can chime in here on that.

I just read that too. Thanks though. Anyone know if converting the tranny to a T5 will hurt the value of the car?

because of the limited number produced, I would say that it could hurt the value. If the number listed above is correct, then the T5 is rarer, but your cars' RPO codes will show an auto. A low production vehicle will always be worth more in it's original state.

No one will ever know for sure because Chevrolet never kept records of option combinations. The best guestimate is to use ratios of known production numbers.

Scott do you have a figure for total 1990 convertible production?

Well that sucks, guess I'll have to get a shift kit and maybe a stall. Should be fun though either way.
