I have a 86 Japanese Firebird brochure (think it's 86, can't check as I'm traveling at the moment) and the same mirrors are on the Firebird.... they do look different from the Firebird pedal style used in 87 or so .... There were some other stuff that differed as well but can't remember at the moment

Those are the RARE AS HELL rpo code DD7 paddle style mirrors,Which came on a few 87 gta's and most export model third gens.I have yet to see them on a camaro,But have seen a few euro spec third gen Pontiac's with them.

i read that all european 3rd gens were mandatory to have those 'paddle' mirrors cuz they are easily colapsable in case of hitting a pedestrian.

Export model Camaro and Firebirds also had seat belt shoulder harnesses for the rear passengers since the mid-80s. I think the first year in the US was '88 or '89?

yes, the paddle mirrors are mandatory equipment to pass JAPANESE BI-ANNUAL INSPECTION.
I am about a month away from having my 1989 T/A here in OKINAWA go through this process. I have all the "stock" japanese equipment, but after it passes, and gets plated I will be pulling off the following.
PADDLE MIRRORS, TOYOTA EXTERNAL FENDER LIGHTS, MANDATORY AMBER (plain firebird style) TAILLIGHTS.
I am pretty close to standing up a F-BODY TEAM over here also.
Here is a pic for ya.

NO!
Not in okinawa, I have documented 6 firebirds varied types, and about 8 camaros, 2 rs's and 6 IROCS. I junked an Iroc last year for the drivetrain. More can be found here...... I posted back in the day

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ighlight=japan

my quote
STORED MY IROC!!!!
Moved to Japan.... While just out walking in my neighborhood, about 2 blocks from my house, I see a 1989 GRAY ON GRAY T/A. Could not believe my eyes.... Learned enough Japanese, to ask how much to sell and what was broken. Found out at 19,500 miles on it, and had been parked for 8 years, with a blown 305.
Bought it for $165.00 USD, and dragged it home with my toyota....
Next would be finding an abandoned 30,000 mile 1989 IROC, with a running TPI 350. Swapped motors, and been building it ever since..............
IROCNROLL89

the day I first saw it....

Wow!
I never knew that the Camaros got the paddle mirrors too! Great to know!
Hey Jan!
Did you get a spare Japanese Firebird brochure?
Now I need one for my collection!
I found a set of paddle mirrors at the junk yard, only in black!
I'm going to sand them, and repaint them white! Not that I'll use them on my 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am, but..............., you never know!

George

...some exported camaros got this mirrors, some not...but don`t ask me why...
...i think, the best and well known example for an early 3.gen export-camaro was the Z28E...

...and here another typical Euro/Export-version, a 1991 GTA:

...look at the paddle-mirrors (btw, the RPO-code here is/was " DD9 " instead of the former used RPO-code" DD7 ", for the same mirrors, but don`t ask why) , basic-taillamps, front-turnsignals...

Japanese export F-bodys were all left hand drive. They were the same as America, minus the lights, and mirrors.

although sold in mainland urope, thirdgens were never sold new here, so ironicly, due to the large USAF presence in the UK, most thirdgens here are US spec rather than euro spec.

all euro thirdgens needed the paddle mirrors to pass safety standards, although they aren't aplicable if the car is imported by an individual rather than a manufacturer.
