305 worth it??????

I'm still thinkin of getting a 87 Iroc 305 TPI. I would be trading my motorcycle for it ,now my question, is a 305 TPI worth getting?Meaning is it fast like mid 14's in the quarter or not really,I mean down the line I would put a 350 or bigger anyways. I would be getting it for $2500 with 80,000 miles in good cond. Not sure what to do opinions wanted ,thanks Bob

Well Im not sure what the major HP gains between the TPI and the TBI, I had an 88 305 TBI and it was kinda slow, but then again it was bone stock! The good thing about 305's are that they keep on runnin for miles n miles

A 305 TPI is low 15s if in good condition. It's faster than a 305 TBI

~cough~

I spose you are right but I love my TBI.

Back to the original question, I'm not much for motorcycles so it seems to me that you have to make that decision first: 2 wheels vs 4.

I'm very sure if you have not had a car to tinker with in the past that car would be a good one to start with. You'll be happy with the initial performance of the TPI unless you grew up driving Vettes or Porsches.

Welcome to the forum Bob.

Depends on the tranny. If it's an auto, then the answer is not really. If it's a 5-speed, then maybe. Different cam makes 25 more HP in the 5-speed car.

However 2,500 isn't a bad price either way. I'd buy it.

Well, 14's and fast are two completely different things. Anyway, my guess would be anywhere from low to high 15's.

No, mine has the peanut cam it. Which means 15.5 if I'm luckey. But I don't race anyway so it doesn't matter. The 5 speed cars got the same cam as the 350. Good for 25 more hp. 215 to my 190.

Well Labrat it looks like when I get the car I'll get a set of headers and an air intake and that will bring around another 45HP for a nice little gain . What are the stock gears in the rear of a 87 iroc auto 305TPI. Then maybe I'd change them out also thanks Bob

If it's a G92 car, like mine, it will have a 3.23 posi ten bolt. If it's not it will have 2.73 posi ten bolt.

G92 is an RPO code that would be on the SPID label in the console.

If it has rear disc brakes, is another way to tell. the 2.73 will have drums on the back.

Not a fool-proof reliable place to look as Disk brakes could be had on the 2.73 as well.

Not on an 87 Camaro with a TPI 305. To get rear dics brakes you had to order the G92 option. This was the first year it was a package option. Prior to that you could get rear disc brakes with pretty much any rear gears.

Now it isn't totally reliable, because someone could swap the drums for discs.
