The vin is not a sure fire way of telling what the car is.
In 88 all Z28's were Iroc-z's. The Camaro White Book says the Z28 was dropped.
However, I prefer to think of it as the Iroc-z became a manditory option on the z28. Afterall the RPO code is Z28, and it says Z28 with Iroc-z below that on the dash.
A Z28 like say an 85-87, no. It can only be an Iroc-z or a Sport Coupe.
I should add that it could be an RS which were built in 88, but only sold in certain parts of the country.

yes, it does indeed have the z-28 badge underneath the dash. and it is an 88. i just thought that was rather interesting.
how can you tell if its an RS? check the rpo codes?

The White Book doesn't say anything about an RPO code for the RS. So I don't know what it would be.
If your car has an 8 or an F in the eighth digit of the vin, then it is an Iroc-z. If it has an E it's either an Iroc-z or a sport coupe. S and it's a sport coupe.
The bottom line is it's not a Z28, Someone may have changed the dash emblem.

The camaro im about to get is a 88 and it says z28 iroc z...Ill find out more later..But i belive they did make them. The decals it has on it says z28(right above Port injeted..) then on the door it says iroc-z
Let's put it differently...
You could get a Z28 or an IROC-Z in years 1985 - 1987. The IROC-Z was a option package (RPO B4Z) on the Z28. In 1988, Chevrolet was downsizing the Camaro lineup. The only options were Sport Coupes and IROC-Zs. The RPO code for the IROC-Z from 1988 - 1990 was Z28 and RPO B4Z was dropped. So, in all actuality, instead of having a Z and an IROC-Z, they were combined into one car. If you went into a dealer to order one, you would pick Z28 on the option order sheet and you would receive an IROC-Z upon delivery. In 1991, the IROC-Z option was discontinued and the Z28 nameplate was resurrected.

Scott,
I have noticed that some 88-90 IROC's did not get a large door decal, only the small IROC badge on the rocker. What would cause this? Did the person order a Z28 and even though they got an IROC it did not have the decal because of how it was ordered? or am I mistaken and someone had just removed the decal from the car?

GM just dropped the Z28 theme from 88-90, and made the IROC-Z its own model instead of an option on the Z28. Everybody's 88-90 is a Z28 if you want to look at it that way, since that RPO was still used to identify the top model level on the Camaro just like it was in previous years.
Nobody's 88 is special because it says Z28 somewhere.
