It should be:
1 - United States
G - GM
2 - Pontiac
A - Seatbelt restraint
W - Trans AM
87 - 2 Door coupe
S - 305 ci V8 LU5 (1983) (Cross Fire)
? - Check Diget
D - 1983
L or N - Van Nuys or Norwood
2 - Pontiac
xxxxx

whats the problem?

3rdgenparts hi
yes i recently traded a 66buick special for a 83 daytona hardtop 97000 miles but it needs a lot of work. 40 mph top speed on delivery gutted the cat and tweaked the valves speedo now pegged before third shift. to be worth taking pics needs new hood, pass fender was told encountered a deer and drivers quarter has some cancer starting. the front seat covers are shot the motor runs but the cam is flat and the bottom end ratteled like mad when i changed the oil, the car drives execelent with no under body rust when i checked it out at a buddys muffler shop. i have been searching for seat covers for the recaro's or some one that can copy them with out selling my first born. i am planing to swap out the 305 for a hot 350 i built a few years ago for a sleeper station wagon and keep the crossfire, hooker shorty headers and custom duals but trash the smog inj system have been wondering if i should keep the old engine for numbers maching car value but need more info on this subject i do not plan on letting this car go it's a keeper and should look like new by spring. any help on locating more research material is greatly apprecatied. have a great day and stay safe chuck

Rather than pull the cover, why not simply count the turns??? Not as accurate but it would give you an idea...

A 3.73 gear for example, you would turn the driveshaft approximately 3 and 3/4 turns to get a wheel to turn one time.

actually on an open diff(if its open) it will have to multiplied x2 since the axles/wheels will turn opposite directions the same distance/amount

i figured it needed the gear lube changed anyway plus wanted to make sure has a posi unit in it, never know what you have when you find salvage markings just checking the brakes found one early caliper and one late one and the late one's e brake is locked up inside and won't adjust
thanks again and have a great turkey day

If you spin the pinion gear and nothing is touching the wheels, it should not matter, as both wheels should turn at the same speed... IF you stop one wheel from spinning then it would be double...

If that is the case then spin the pinion one time, count the revolutions of each tire, then add them together if different, then devide by 2 to get the ratio...

OR just change the DIFF lube and count the teeth .
