85 & 86 Firebirds w/ 3.70 9 Bolts??????
I've seen service parts listings (although discontinued) at my local GM service dept. for a G54 option on 85 & 86 Firebirds which included a 3.70 ratio limited-slip 9 Bolt rearend. The axle codes were 9XX & 9XR. Does anyone know:
1) What models these were on (were they part of a special package)?
2) How many were produced each year?
3) How many came with disc brakes?
Thanks. Dwain

All 9 bolts had disc brakes. And that was a over the counter option (dealer-installed maybe), I think SLP sold them. Thats all I know. You couldn't order with the 3.70s

The 85-86 305 HO T/A 5 speed cars came with the 3.70 disc brake 9 bolt. The 84 5 speeds came with 3.73s in a 10 bolt. Don't know the production #s for 85-86 but I'm sure it's quite low because 1) most people went for the TPI/auto combo and 2) the HOs had a problem with fuel boiling in the carb.

Thanks Mark, I knew if it was listed by GM that some had to be made. Now if only I can find one. If anybody has a book that lists how many cars were produced with RPO G54, please let me know. And 1LE, there were 9 bolts produced with drum brakes. I've seen them in wrecking yards. SLP did not make the 9 Bolt, BTR Automotive Ltd. (a subsidiary company of Borg-Warner Automotive at the time) produced all 9 Bolts (Their actual name is the 78 series differential) and they are still produce them in Austrailia for Holden and GM European markets. SLP was only distributor of the Dana 44 axle assembly which was made by the Dana Corporation.
