how rare are the hard top convet two seater camaros

I own a Hard Top Conver Two Seater Camaro... I do not know if the Camaro is
a z28 or IROC.... I org had a 305 TPI/700R-4... I am replacing it with a 383
500hp/460fpt...
My point to this post is that my understanding is that only 30 of the
"ROADSTERS" were made in 85... I know that some were first offered in 84
and some were even offered for the Firebird/TA... None of my info is founded
due to the face that GM has no idea of the cars existence I just can not seem to
find anyone who remebers....The only reason I know this was a factory offer is
due to the owners of a other "ROADSTER" here in Hollywood,FL......They
bought the Camaro off the show room floor and had papers and all....I do not
recall the price for the Camaro but it was deff more than the reg ones....CAN
ANY ONE HELP!!!!!!!
I am wanting to put together a club for us who own a Two Seater Camaro and I
do not want to give incorrect information about the car....PLEASE HELP....

They were an aftermarket conversion not authorized by GM, so there will be no way of telling how many there are. The problem is that I could have the same company do mine tomorrow and there would be no way to distinguish the two, which makes the value totally non-dependant on its rarity.

Since you said that others in your area have them, I'd say that a local dealer either sent them all out to be done, or the conversion was done by a local shop that did a bunch.

You must love it enough to die in it, eh?

500lbs of torque is way too much for a convertible, it'll be twizzled sticked before you even get to see the engine broken in.

I have talked to a few lucky people who have a two seater.... They live all
over the us.... I live I Hollywood,Fl near Miami and just around here I
know of 5.... In fact there is one about 2 miles away...I talked to the owner
of it and he had bought the Camaro off the showroom Floor new in 85...
He has all the org papers.... I do not recall the org cost of the Roadster but
it was well beyond the reg Camaro.... I then found a person who lives in I
believe Ny...He E-Mailed me his org brochure of the Camaro when it was
sold by Chevy.... I will try to place them on this post when I find out how...
One this I did find out is a co is Ca named AUTO FORM was the
contracted co who did the body mods... But as far as I know they are no
longer around... I have not been able to locate them.... I have also talked to
a few one woman who has on and a other guy with one and they had theirs
appraised @ aprox $25k-/+..... I am not sure who did the appraisal but
they live in diff locations in the US and they got the same fig. on value....

I know that 500hp is deff pushing the proverbial envelop for a convert but
what the hell.... LOL...If it kills me the what a way to go..... I truly have no
doubt the car will kill me sooner or later.... I am deff investing a great deal
in the structural support of the car to keep it from flexing...In the end it will
be worth it...... 500hp with the top down.... What could be better.... And if
it does kill me what the hell...I will be dead what would I care.... I am
destined for Hell sooner or later.......

I think I've seen one of the T/A jobs here in MA. Do you have the old T-Bird style body over the rear seats that kinda molds up to the front seats. (make sense?) I think the 60's Thunderbirds had them. Anyway, I think he has a bunch of information on the guys who built them - If I see him I get some info for you...

Hey Mike 25 thanks for your reply..... What i have is the Camaro mine is an 85 hard top convert two seater camaro.... I do know they made some of the Firebirds/TA with this special opt... If you can get any info on this from your friend that would be great....

TDM, This might be straying from the topic of history. But I recommend having a SFC installed, especially if you are serious about the engine swap. It really tightened up the suspension on my 90 RS ragtop. Good luck, Lon.

Roadster just like mine.... Check it out.... Just cut and past the web sight

I purchased mine new in 1984 from the dealer but it is not a GM product. From
what I remember there about 5 firms during the early 80's that were making or
going to make 3rd gen convertible camaros. Mine is by AutoForm out of Elkhart
Indiana. They built the 2 seat roadster ones with the semi hardtop. It is a
fiberglass shell with metal L brackets to support the corners. See the
brochure at the webpage. I had a custom top made about 6 months ago. It looks
better with Cotton than vinyl as original. I am not aware of a full hardtop
by AutoForm only the semi.

AutoForm went out of business late 84 early 85. The 85's were the last. The
dealer where I bougt my 84 had one of the last , an 85 305 tpi that he
scavenged some parts off when I came in for warranty work because Auto Form
was out of business.I am confused by the 350 you have. One place to look to
check verify orginal engine displacement besides the vin# is the emissions
tag by the fan shroud under the hood. It will list the engine size for the
emissions controls. I would be curious to see a tag listing 5.7L in an 85
Camaro.

The AutoForm production number and tag is on the drivers side jam (see web
pictures).

As for replacement parts, I don't know of any. They did reuse some original
GM parts in the conversion. An example is the hook for the top on the hatch.
It is a clothes hangar hook. One will have to find a parts car or get
creative. I do see these cars occasionally for sale. I know of one at a small
lot dealer in Ft Worth, Texas but it is a sport coupe model not z-28.There
always seems to be a couple for sale at the web site for Auto Trader
Magazine. I wonder what ever happened to the original molds ?

Mine has 95k miles and its been modified somewhat. I made the mistake of
setting up the suspension for more advanced driving which did not help the
structure too much. I have found a good chassis shop who will do custom work
so I intend to get custome SFC's and New X crossmember built. You mentioned
the fiberglass cracking in the corners of the top. I think this is common . I
also had this fixed but it did it again as well as begin chippin at the
edges. The hatch is just too heavy. When you put the hatch down just don't
drop it very far. One thing to be careful is the rear hinges for the hatch.
Water gets in there and will rust the bolts. I found this out when the hatch
almost fell off the car when they snapped. Like I said the hatch is heavy!!.
It would be a good idea to check them and relplace them with high grade rust
resistant ones if they look rusty.

I don't have any total production numbers. I know you don't see them too
often on the road, but I do get quite a few looks when I take it out.
Unfortunately it isn't quite as fun as my 99 SS. It needs some work to get
back into shape.I do enjoy it more than my 91 convertible.

Hopefully I have helped you somehwat . If you need any more info or would
want a faxed black and white copy of a the original 84 brochure LMK.

I am assuming by the pictures posted in the last post, that they did have the thing I tried to describe behind the seats. I must warn you, I speak to the man with the T/A at our local cruise nights (which have ended) I might catch him on a nice crisp fall day with the top down, but you never know. I might not see him until next spring. Either way I'll try to get you the information ASAP.

I am sure that if I do see him - my Z could definately run him down

I HATE convertibles....but that looks wicked with the top down. Almost makes me wanna find one so I can rob the panel off of it and mold it permanently to mine. Just make a warm weather vehicle kinda like a viper or something. If it rains...I'll drive faster! I like those Recaro's he's got in it. Anybody know what model they are???

Yeah. Just get your saws-all out.

ASC, Choo-Choo and similar places will still do the conversion, but whether that back seat cover is still available is another story.

I was reading an article this weekend in the 1987 Camaro Specification Sheet from GM. They say that there was a 2-seat roadster manufactured from Auto Form. There were about 500 produced since 1982. One of the last produced was an 86 Iroc. The ICC is looking for owners of these cars to start up a registry. contact them at:

Choo-Choo advertises their monte carlo/el camino body kits in the back of chevy mags, so maybe you can find a number there. I don't have any info on ASC.
