Bell housing problems
Bell housing problems
I have an 82 Z/28 that I am putting a 4 speed out of an 84 Z/28 in. The car has a hydrolic clutch and according to GM there was never a 4 speed offered in the third gen. I have gone to a bell housing from a truck with the hydrolic set up in hopes to solve the problem. Can any one tell me if the 4 speed was offered with the hydrolic clutch in these cars? Thanks Dave
The only 3rd gens with 4 speed manuals were 82 and 83, and they all has mechanical clutch linkages, no hydraulic.
One thing you need to look into is the fact that all 5 speeds are rotated about 17* in the F-bodys (different bellhousing), If they also did that with the 4 speeds then the tranny might bolt up to a truck bell, but the rear mount will be way off.
Good Luck,
John

You will probably get more response if you move your post over to the Transmission and Drivline section. Early third gens did come out wit a 4 speed.I don't know if they had hydrolic clutches. Are you sure that your setup came from an 84? I don't think that 4 spds were offered in 84. One easy way to tell is by checking the shift linkage. 4 spds had the shifter and linkage on the outside of the trans. T-5's had internal linkage, ie the shift lever came out of the trans tailshaft housing. The pickup bellhousing won't work because third gen bellhousings rotated the trans possition a couple of degrees to the left (about 11:00 o'clock). This was required to make room for the clutch throwout arm in the very tight 3rd gen trans tunnel.

Some are faster but mine's fast enough.

There were 4-speeds in 82; 83 up, all manuals were the T-5. Most of the 82 4-speeds were the Saginaw which IMHO is the exact opposite of a performance gearbox, it's really a 6-cyl. truck piece. A very few 82s were said to have been equipped with the Warner T10, which is an excellent unit.
The truck bell housing will not work, as the clutch fork would have to go right through the gas pedal. As the other post said, the trans is rotated to provide clearance for it. As a result the extension housing is different from the trans for any other kind of car.
If you have an actual 82 F-body T-10, you don't need anything special to put it into the 84. It will bolt right up to the 84 bell housing. The hydraulic / mechanical linkage issue is non-existent; the trans does not care. They are the same as far as it is concerned. I know because I swapped a hydraulic setup into my 83 with no other modification; later I put in a 91 T-5 again with no modification whatsoever. These are Chevrolets, you know; for the most part, stuff interchanges easily, unlike Brand F.
If you really have an actual 82 F-body T-10 (have I said that enough yet?), just stick it in your car with the Hurst shifter for the 82 application. I wish I had that setup in mine....

I have an 82 Z28 with the factory T10 still in it.The linkage is manual, and as stated elsewhere there was manual linkage in 82&3,84&up was hydraulic. All 4 speed cars were mechanical, and have specific bellhousings.I had to order a scattershield for my car,Lakewood part#15015,only usable on mechanical linkage third gens,so the tech guy from lakewood says.Hope this helps somehow,if not, give me a holler
