Don't worry about the demise of performance from GM

I know everybody is upset over "the end of the F-body", so I'd like to mention this.

Remeber the GTO? At a time when GM decided to kill off all performance cars, and parts, Pontiac created the GTO.

In the late fifties, and the early sixties, sales were working there way to mostly family sedans. GM thought that it would be a good idea to stop making performance cars, and mainstream big, bulky family sedans. Hey, that's where the money was, so who could blame them?

Then in 1963 Pontiac was given the option of selling a "economy sedan" The LeMans. Hidden behind a name taken from a popular race, there was a performance package, the GTO.

Keeping it a secret was hard. Finally word got out, and the big guys got upset. But they gave permission as an end to performance era, but the public loved it.

Soon, everybody was making "muscle cars".

My point? History repeats itself. We haven't seen the last of the performance that GM will bring us.

Anyway, we have the best years, so it doesn't matter.

Well, now I know who to ask if I have any questions. The man!!! The buddman91rs. Or should I say, the BUTTMAN?

Try and read up on how GM is killing off the F-body, before you go and reply with something stupid.

Woops, too late.

Maybe I read buddman's post differently, but I take it that performance (power) is not dead and that the engine is underrated. In that respect I very much agree. However, as the GM Hi-Tech said, even at this underrated power level, they still produce more than "that other car" and are getting penalized by the insurance companies.

Probably, GM should have had some "feature" that made the car "under perform" but any "hot rodder" with a wrench could "disable" and make it perform to its full potential. Something like Pontiac did with their 400 Firebirds in 1969.

At that time, Firebirds and GTOs had the same engines but GT0s ALWAYS made more HP. This was to make up for the extra weight of the GTO. Pontiac had made the Firebird's carb not "fully open". After 5 minutes, you adjust the carb's linkage and now you could make it open fully and get max HP.

But, I guess GM just wanted people to know that the new LS1 was serious performer and a worthy replacement of its old small block. Guess their success got the better of them in this case.

But I do feel the F-body will make a return some time in the future. Let's just hope it will be a RWD and not a FWD vehicle.

The big difference between 1963 and today is John DeLorean. I believe that GM has booted out all members of the team that thought like he did. For the ones that do not know who he is, he made the GTO and started the muscle car era. Thank him every time you start your car in the morning. Car people don't run car companies, accountants do, and that is truly a shame. Just thought I would preach a little, sorry.

WHO LIT THE FUSE ON YOUR TAMPON STINGER? the only reason gm has to make more power is that gm has to make the cars wanted.the fords are like caddys now with their suspension. GM has more handling potential than the F-O-R-D-S that handling comes with a harsh ride to and from work. the rustangs are for cream puffing they have a soft suspension and a lack of power. Gm is stomping all over ford but not many families want to have a car that will snap their baby's neck and snap their back driving to and from work. like i said before there is no demise in performance just a demise in people wanting to have a hellufalot power and no backseat room. personally im f'n pissed that everyone else in this world wants a cream puffer that gets 60 miles a gallon. i love sprots cars(F-O-R-D-S included but not as much)and i wish thats all people drove but the senior citizens and the so-called "men" of today just completly over power us small few who enjoy a hobby such as ours....sniff.....
