RPO code D27 Locking cover

If anyone is familar with this option please respond. I am trying to find this locking compartment in Black. From what I understand this was a rare option and is now discontinued at the dealer. In fact I have only seen two of these locking rear compartments and they were both on 91 & 92 B4C's from the FBI. Any leads will be appreciated

They aren't really rare in the early cars... Most Berlinetta's and early t/a's had them, as did many others. The later years used basically the same deal but they housed the bose speakers... Check the salvage yards, they aren't that unusual.

Hey all,
I have a 1992 B4C with that cover. You are correct, they are "rare" and they also have been discontinued from GM. The previous owner thought it would be cool to cut holes into it and mount speakers in the cover. The earlier ones DO NOT fit. The pull down latch is larger in the 91-92, so the the older covers will not close. The 91-92 ones are 99% plastic, where the earlier ones have a metal hinge. If your car didn't come from the factory with the option, then I'm not sure how your mount it. From the factory, there are studs that cover the body to mount the cover on. I figure it would be a pain to try and mount one with nuts and bolts do to the gas tank and the tight space. If you do find one, let me know... I need a black one also.

Thanks Drew and everyone. Mine did come from the factory with it but the FBI cut a small hole in it for the radio wires. I will keep searching and will let you know John. I would be interested in details of your B4C too.

The statement that the panels are different for 91-92 is incorrect, the only change to the panels was in 86 to account for the power hatch pulldown...

If there are three of them in my local salvage yard, I wouldn't exactly say they're rare...

Are any of them black that are in your local junk yard. How rare or not they are I dont know. I was merely stating that I have only seen it twice so I thought they were rare. I am only familar with the 1991 and 1992 B4C's and Z28's. Let me know if you find a black one. It sounds like two of us need one on this list.

Drew is right. The only change in the shape of the locking lid was in 1986 when the electric hatch pulldown made its debut. I have seen plenty of Camaros with it... in fact, I added one to my car which did not come with one originally.

I believe all these pieces were made of black plastic, the only difference being the color of the carpeting that's glued to it. Also, the rear plastic piece is different too.

I know there was one black one in an early T/A, but since the early T/A didn't have a power hatch pulldown it wouldn't fit. not to mention all the cars are under 2-3 feet of snow and I'm working days now...

p.haze92,

I notice you're just up the street from me. I've seen more than several in a couple of junk yards down here. It might be worth a trip for you.

Being that only 103 Camaros had D27 I would say thats rare, for 1992 anyway. And I think you had to order the custom interior to get it.

Maybe the ones that came in the '91-'92 came out earlier. I went through the local GM Camaro salvage yard looking at all the camaros. Two things I know for a fact. Black was not the only color. I saw dark grey and tan ones. The second thing is... The eariler ones (not sure when it started or ended) have metal hinge(s). The metal hinge runs the length of the cover. The 1992 that I have, the hinge is made of plastic and has three short rods to keep the two parts together. The pull down change may infact happened in 86, I'm not arguing that. I saw at least ten compartment covers at the salvage yard. None were 1990 through 1992. None of them were like the one my car came with. all of them had metal hinges. I can't imagine out of all the ones I inspected that day they came out before 1986.

Dave M. Where did you find the numbers that states 103 made in 1992 w/ D27 option? Just curious.

p.haze 92, I got the figures from the Camaro White Book. Oddly though there are no D27 production figures for 1991.

Thanks David M. I was curious and it would be interesting to know how many of the B4C's had the D27 out of the 103. That is something that cant be found out I'm sure. Oh well, it couldn't have been many.

Well I have done this. About four years ago I ran numbers on '92 production and have the last 162 B4C cars printed out. That would be cars 427-589. I found this, of the 162 B4C's I have 31 had the D27 option. Of those, 9 were government issued cars with base level interior! So my post that said you had to order the upgraded interior to get D27 is incorrect.

How do you run the numbers for just B4C's? Are they spid sheets you had run? I wonder if you have my car in your pile. It was built April of 1992 and is a GAM rpo for the Government and has the base black interior w/ D27. I would like to catalog some info like that so any help would be great.
