I would like to say "Hi", as I am new to the board.

I am wondering if what I have is rare. It is a 1989 T/A with a factory B2L/L98. Has anyone else seen one??? Are they as rare as I think they are??? This will help me decide how prestine I am going to keep this car. I know I have something special, I just want to know how special. Here are some pics.

There seem to have been plenty of them made but I sure don't see them around anymore that's for sure. It's a shame that there weren't better production records kept. Now get back to my board

The problem is that the TA and GTA are both Trans Ams. The GTA was an option of the Trans Am and GM only kept records of one specific option with a particular body style. So the production numbers for the B2L/L98 for the Trans Am body style will have all B2L/L98s installed in both Trans Ams and GTAs.

As normal numbers go (and they vary greatly) generally the numbers for the L98 option is about 50% of the GTA option. You can assume the majority of the L98s ended up in the GTA, but not specifically how many were installed in GTAs and how many in Trans Ams. But, if I had to make a guess, about 75-80% of the L98s ended up in GTAs and 20-25% ended up in T/As.

I have tried to figure it out on my own. I have the # of T/A's built, including GTA's, the # of 350's installed. But there are too many variables, as the 350 went into the T/A's, GTA's and Formulas, and 1500 T/A's had the Turbo V6. The only way to find out is to go thru EVERY invoice that PHS has!

In 1989 there were 9,631 GTA's built, 16,670 Formulas, 5,721 T/A's(non-GTA, in-which 1,555 were tt/a's) and 13041 B2L's installed.

Whats up Karfreek good to see you over here,(I thought you were here before though, all the boards are BTW,the pic looks good Do you have a record of how many B2L's were installed in both the Trans Ams and GTA's like Glenn91 said. There were 6554 B2L/Y84's so if there is a total #,just subtract that from it.

Whats up black5.7gta

Well, maybe you can help. The RPO for the T/A is Y83, do the GTA's have a Y83 RPO???

If 6554 of the B2L's went into the GTA, that leaves about 6,500 to be split between the T/A & Formula. Is there any specs on the Formulas??? If we can get that figure, we are golden.

I really want to find this out!

Jay

To the best of my understanding, the 5.7L V-8s are rather rare in any year T/A after 1987. After several conversations with various people connected with PMD, it seems that the GTA orders that took the 5.7L were alotted first, then the Formula models, and then T/As..... this is what I have been able to decipher. It's not "gospel", but I've heard it from more than one source.

GTAs will carry the Y84 code, plus the WS4 Trans Am RPO..... not the Y83 code mentioned.

Actually, with access to the correct records, it would be possible to tell exactly how many '89 T/As were built with the 5.7L. I've seen the RPO records and each year after 1987 is broken down separately as follows:

Base Firebird, Base Firebird w/W66 (Formula), Base Firebird w/ WS4 (Trans Am), and WS4 Trans Am w/ Y84 (GTA)

There's a separate RPO sheet for each model each year. However, the 1987 GTA info is not separate from the Trans Am data as in later years.

When I got my figures, I got only the GTA numbers, but had access to all of them for each year 1987-1992.... so the RPO data is broken down in such a way as to find out that particular info. You just have to find a way to get it.....

Ok, so i'm getting warmer, I have a lead on what I have to do. I got the Y83 RPO from the info packet that I received from PHS, but will note that I am looking for B2L equiped non-Y84, WS4's.

Frankie, where can I go to get this info??? I should have started this 'project' earlier, but things have been hectic. Would PHS have anything that I am looking for, or do I have to start banging on the doors of PMD?

In Canada, GM Historical Services can tell you the number of L98s in the Trans Am body style. This would mean the L98s only installed in TAs and GTAs. It would not include Formulas as they are based on the "base" body style (so ALL L98s in that body style only ended up in Formulas).

Statistically, approximately 35-40% of all GTAs made had the L98 from year to year (this represents approximate 80-85% of all L98s going to GTAs in the Trans Am body style). If you subtract the number of approximate number of L98s in GTAs from the total L98s for the Trans Am body style, that will give you an approximate number of L98s available for the Trans Ams.

But again, you will never be able to get EXACT numbers. Life would have been a lot easier if the GTA had been its own separate body style: then we would know for sure.
