International Race of Champions. Run by NASCAR guys on NASCAR tracks. Equally prepared cars, testing the drivers skill.
Earliest I remember is 76 or 77 Camaro's being used. Chevy dropped sponsorship in 1991, thats why Camaro's went back to Z28 in 91.

IROC started in 1974 (in Porsches) and is not just NASCAR drivers, though the majority are. Also SCCA, CART, IMSA, and FISA among others.

Chevy gave up the rights to the IROC series on 1 January 1990, which is why the '90 model year was cut short, and the '91 year started early.

Idiot's Race Only Car is another favorite...

There's an IROC race in 2 weeks I think, at Talladega. They're using Firebirds this year as they have for the past 3 or 4. Why Pontiac doesn't have the brains to use the rights to the name for marketing is beyond my feeble wit.

After Chevy let the contract lapse, Dodge picked it up, so there were (insert gagging sounds here) Dodge Daytonas, otherwise known as Misstoobitchy Eclipses, for a few years. That looked really stupid; since Dodge had no motor program at the time, they used Chevrolet engines. I guess now though everybody's used to seeing RWD V8-powered race cars with bodies that look like front-drivers. Some of us still have a problem with that for some odd reason.

There are IIRC 4 IROC races each year; they're an invitation-only event, with 12 participants; they usually go about 7 deep into the Winston Cup points championship, pick up a Busch guy or 2, and a couple from IRL, CART, F1, and various other series occasionally such as TransAm if they can get someone from them. They run only at the big oval American tracks. They're usually on the Saturday before the WC race. There was one at Daytona but it is I believe the weekend before the 500. Dale might even have won it, he won alot of them.

Dodge then designed the Avenger for the series, which actually went into prdouction.

Correction:

The Daytona had NOTHING to do with Mitsubishi...the Daytona was developed in house and ran from '84-'94 (?). It was the Avenger that was little more than a normally aspirated Eclipse with a V6 option and a different body. It was even built in the Diamond Star plant alongside the Eclipse and Talon.

At least IROC is back to GM again, using T/As. Many agree though...the golden age of IROC was watching the Camaro IROCs that looked SOOO much like the street cars flying around the track...
