Need info on an 89' IROC i am about to buy!!!!HELP ASAP!

I am about to buy an 89' IROC and need some info, but before I do,here are the specs

Owner is unsure if its a 5.0 or 5.7.I looked on inside of the hood and it says 5.0....

it has t tops

IROC foglights

IROC hood

Now,my questions.....Did IROC ever come with 5.0's/305?

Also did 89 have a carb or TBI?

All and any info will be greatly appreciated. The owner is asking a pretty cheap price but i dont want to make sure Im not getting a IROC wanna-be

I'll try my hand at this.If you post the VIN we can tell you what she came with from the factory. The 8th digit in the VIN is the engine identifier, for '89 F = 305(5.0)TPI,8 = 350(5.7)TPI(E = 305(5.0 TBI but I don't think this was availible in the IROC).Also look for the RPO codes located on the underside of the center console cover.Other's will be able to help you help furtherespecially with the RPO's.

The Z28 and IROC options were combined from 1988-early 1990 so a lot of the bottom of the barrel features of the Z28 became available on the IROC. Check for RPO Z28 on the SPID sticker in the center console glove box.

A base no option late model IROC would have a 305 TBI, 15"rims, and even no POSI!

The last year for carburated V8s was 1987.

Dens71TA I"m not soo sure about your post..

I own two '88 IROC's, both have 305 tpi's and 16" wheels. Also every other iroc in town has 16's and tpi's.

As far as I know all IROC's were the highest trim level avaliable (about sc, rs, z28, etc) and yes there was a time when z-28's were not made, they were all irocs.

However I'm pretty sure that all '89 irocs had tpi's and 16" wheels from the factory.

Check the VIN and RPO codes to know what came stock with the car. If the decal under the hood sayd 5.0, then it came with a stock 305. (nothing wrong with that.. the LB9 305's had only 10 horse less then the 350 L98's)

Chances are the stock engine could have been replaced with a tbi motor. As far as I know tbi's were not avaliable with the iroc option, period (although I could be wrong) If you really want to be certain, check the casting number on the block. On the back of the block (right side?) you can remove the windsheild wiper motor (3 easy bolts) and check the back of the block there.. either with a mirror or piece of putty. That'll tell you 100% what the displacement of that motor is.

Good luck.

TBI was available on the Iroc, so were 15" wheels... Dens71TA's post was correct on all counts.

If the decal under the hood sayd 5.0, then it came with a stock 305.

So by that logic when my 91 Firebird said 5.0L and had a TPI emissions label it came with it stock? Nevermind that its a 3.1L and always has been, exactly as the VIN number shows.

Never trust stickers, trust the VIN for original equipment, and the SPID if it's VIN number matches the VIN on the car.

Do a search on the net. From 88-early 90 the Z28 and IROC were combined into the "IROC package" All the base low end options on the Z28 was now base on the IROC.

I have a friend with a bottom of the barrel '88 IROC. 305 TBI, 5-speed, 15" rims, peg-leg cast iron drum rear axle. The only options I can see that it has is T-tops and air conditioning. SPID label in the glove box matches the VIN and of course it has the Z28 RPO. You had to option up for TPI, 16" rims, and aluminum drums/rear discs during '88-90.

The '85-87 IROCs had all the high level suspension options as standard equipment.

The fundimental problem here is the notion that all Iroc-z's were loaded with options.

This is simply not the case.

Some of them were as basic as any other Camaro.

Case in point, the first Iroc-z I looked at buying had no options what so ever. It was an 89, 15" wheels, TBI, no air, no power options, nothing! I've seen Sport Coupes better equiped!

Labrat that's the same thing that happens to musclecars of the '64 to '72 era.People think the buckets console, gauges etc.. came standard. The '70 MC SS454 I had was loaded but I had a friend that had one that the only "extra" she had was a tilt wheel.
Look at the 1LE cars - radio and heater delete,no pwr anthing but brakes and steering.Only the go fast goodies are there.

THe ONLY year the IROC had TPI as the BASE engine should be 1990, all other years they could have had the lesser LG4 or LO3 engines...

I looked at an 87 IROC convertable, it had the LG4 in it.

ive seen a iroc tbi, formula tbi, T/A tbi and carb i own a carbed T/A suspose to be top of line just like iroc its a ws6 car but has the slowest v8 lg4. i didnt read everybodies threads was in a hurry but my *** if its got tpi just look at the codes in your console if they are there. if its a 305 it will have LB9 if its a 350 it has L98. 89 is a good year they got bigger disc brakes that year. i really wouldnt give a crap what engine it had as long as its nice and the price is right and its what you want worry about it after you buy it unless you want a specific engine. also if its a tpi car theres one more big hint of what it is it will have iroc badges at the bottom of the ground effects at the back of the front wheel well that will say IROC-z and underneath that it will say 5.0 or 5.7 or on the rear bumper it will say 5.0tpi or 5.7tpi so its not that hard to tell. if its not the stock motor there should be numbers on the side of the block somewhere. i know there is on mopars. should be on all blocks gm or others.
